Reed Diffuser FAQs
Choosing and using your reed diffuser
What is a reed diffuser?
A reed diffuser is a bottle of scented oil with a bunch of fibre reeds standing in it. The fibre reeds soak up the oil and release the scent into the room. It has no flame and needs no power. One bottle scents a room for about 2 to 4 months.
Makers use essential oils, fragrance oils or a mix of both. The reeds are usually rattan or fibre.
How do reed diffusers work?
Each fibre reed is full of tiny channels. The oil climbs up these channels from the bottom of the bottle. When it reaches the dry tip, it turns into vapour and scents the air.
Turn the fibre reeds over and the wet ends are now at the top. This gives the scent a quick boost.
Where is the best place to put a reed diffuser?
Put it where people walk past and the air moves gently. Keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators, open windows, children and pets. Good spots are:
- A toilet or bathroom.
- The hallway, so guests smell it as they walk in.
- A sideboard, TV stand or side table in the living room.
- A home office desk.
- A guest bedroom.
- A bedroom chest of drawers.
- A kitchen counter or dining table.
Always stand it on a steady surface with a coaster or tray beneath. Hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms and small living rooms work best.
How many fibre reeds should I use in a reed diffuser?
Start with fewer fibre reeds and add more until the scent is right for you. More fibre reeds give a stronger scent, but the oil runs out sooner.
- Toilets, bathrooms and small rooms: 3 to 4 fibre reeds.
- Medium rooms: 6 to 8 fibre reeds.
- Large rooms: all the fibre reeds, or two bottles in the same scent.
In a small room with little fresh air, use fewer fibre reeds so the scent does not get too strong.
How often should I turn my fibre reeds?
Once a week. The ends that sat in the oil come to the top and release a fresh burst of scent. The dry ends go into the oil and soak it up for next time.
Turn them over a sink or a cloth, as they drip. Wash your hands after.
Can I use a reed diffuser in a bedroom?
Yes. A soft scent can help a bedroom feel calm. A reed diffuser has no flame and uses no power, so you can leave it all night.
Do not put it right next to your pillow. Place it across the room instead. If a pet sleeps on your bed, choose a scent without oils that are harmful to pets.
Can I use a reed diffuser in a bathroom or a toilet?
Yes. Small rooms suit reed diffusers well. Keep the bottle away from the window and from wet surfaces. Use 3 to 4 fibre reeds so the scent does not fill the room too much.
If your toilet and bathroom are separate, put a bottle in each.
Do reed diffusers work in large or open plan rooms?
Yes, but one bottle may not be enough. In a big space the scent spreads thin before you notice it.
Use all the fibre reeds, or place two or three bottles around the room. Use the same scent in each, so they do not clash. Warm base notes like vanilla and cedarwood carry well in big rooms. See our reed diffusers for large rooms.
Performance and fragrance
Why can’t I smell my reed diffuser anymore?
There are two common reasons:
- Nose blindness: after a few days, your brain gets used to the scent and stops noticing it. The reed diffuser is still working. Cheap reed diffusers can also fade within days, so quality matters.
- Clogged fibre reeds: dust and old oil block the channels in the fibre reeds. Swap them for fresh fibre reeds.
To test it, ask someone who has not been in the room for a while. If they can smell it, the reed diffuser is working.
Why can guests smell my reed diffuser, but I can’t?
This is a good sign. It means the reed diffuser is working. Your brain treats a scent it smells every day as background, so you stop noticing it. Your guests notice it because it is new to them.
Swap scents now and then. A new scent gives your nose something fresh to notice.
Why has my reed diffuser gone weak?
The most common causes are:
- You have got used to the scent.
- The fibre reeds are clogged.
- The oil has dropped below the ends of the fibre reeds.
- The room is colder, draughtier or bigger than before.
- The bottle sits on a high shelf or in a corner with little air flow.
- One bottle is not enough for the size of the room.
Turn the fibre reeds, add one or two fresh fibre reeds, or move the bottle to a spot with gentle air flow. If the bottle is still full but the scent is weak, new fibre reeds usually fix it.
Why is my reed diffuser evaporating so fast?
The usual causes are:
- It is near an open window, a fan or air conditioning.
- It sits in direct sun or near a radiator.
- It has too many fibre reeds for the room.
- The oil has a high alcohol base, which dries out faster. Cheaper reed diffusers often use one.
To make it last longer, move it to a cooler, sheltered spot and use fewer fibre reeds.
How long should a reed diffuser last?
Most last 2 to 4 months. Our 200ml reed diffuser lasts up to 24 weeks. How long yours lasts depends on:
- The size of the bottle.
- The quality of the oil.
- How much the air moves in the room.
- How warm the room is.
- How many fibre reeds you use.
Heat, extra fibre reeds and turning the fibre reeds very often will all make it run out sooner.
How can I make my reed diffuser smell stronger?
Try these steps:
- Add more fibre reeds.
- Turn the fibre reeds once a week.
- Swap clogged fibre reeds for fresh ones.
- Use two bottles in a large room.
- Keep it away from heat, sun and steam.
- Move it to a spot with gentle air flow.
If it is still weak, try a better quality reed diffuser, such as our luxury reed diffusers.
Why does my reed diffuser smell different after a few weeks?
A scent has top, heart and base notes. The light top notes leave first, so the blend shifts over time. Air can also change the oil a little.
A small change is normal. If it smells sour or stale, replace the bottle. Clogged fibre reeds and nose blindness can also make a scent seem different.
Why does my reed diffuser smell stronger in winter or warm weather?
In warm weather: heat makes the oil evaporate faster. The scent is stronger, but the bottle runs out sooner.
In winter: central heating warms the air, and windows stay shut. Less fresh air comes in to carry the scent away. So the scent builds up and seems stronger than in spring or summer.
In a cold room with no heating, the opposite happens. The oil evaporates slowly and the scent seems weaker.
In winter, we suggest you:
- Keep the bottle away from radiators, heaters and fires.
- Take out one or two fibre reeds if the scent feels too strong.
- Open a window for a few minutes each day.
- Add a fibre reed or turn them more often in a cold room.
Refills and maintenance
Can I refill my reed diffuser bottle?
Yes. Our 200ml refills fit every IVNA London reed diffuser bottle and come with a fresh set of fibre reeds. A refill costs £42, which is £16 less than a new reed diffuser.
Only refill with the same scent from the same brand. Mixing brands or blends can spoil the scent. Put a cloth under the bottle while you pour.
Should I replace the fibre reeds when I refill my reed diffuser?
Yes. Old fibre reeds are full of the last oil and soak up new oil poorly. That is why every IVNA London refill comes with new fibre reeds.
For the best result:
- Wash and dry the bottle first.
- Refill with the same scent.
- Use new fibre reeds every time.
Can I reuse old fibre reeds?
We do not advise it. Over time, the channels in the fibre reeds fill with dried oil and dust. Old fibre reeds release less scent and can mix the old scent with the new one.
Why have my fibre reeds changed colour?
This is normal. Fibre reeds darken as they soak up the oil. Heavier parts of the scent also build up inside them.
If the fibre reeds look mouldy, feel damp or smell bad, replace them.
How should I store reed diffuser refills?
Keep them in a cool, dark place with the cap closed tight. Keep them out of the sun and away from heat.
Store them out of reach of children and pets, and away from food and drink.
What should I do if the reed diffuser liquid looks cloudy or smells unusual?
A slight change in colour is normal, especially with natural oils. But stop using it if the oil turns very cloudy, has bits floating in it or smells sour. Contact us for a replacement or refund.
Safety and care
Are reed diffusers safe around children?
Treat the oil as harmful if swallowed or if it gets on skin or in eyes. Keep your reed diffuser:
- Out of reach of children.
- On a steady surface where it cannot be knocked over.
- Away from toys, snacks and play areas.
If a child swallows or spills the oil, get medical advice straight away. Keep the box or label to hand, as it lists the ingredients.
Are reed diffusers safe around pets?
They need care around cats, dogs and other pets. Put them where pets cannot knock them over, chew the fibre reeds or lick the oil. Some oils can harm pets if swallowed or if a pet stays close to them for a long time.
If your pet touches or swallows the oil, call your vet straight away. Keep the label to hand so you can tell them what is in it. Read more in are reed diffusers safe for cats and dogs?
Can reed diffusers cause headaches or allergies?
Yes, for some people. A strong scent can cause headaches, nausea or allergy symptoms. It is more likely in a small room with little fresh air, or with too many reed diffusers for the space.
If someone at home is sensitive to scent:
- Use fewer fibre reeds and keep the reed diffuser out of their bedroom.
- Put it in a room with good air flow.
- Choose a light, soft scent.
- Do not use one in rooms where they spend a lot of time.
Can I use a reed diffuser if someone in my home has asthma?
Take care. Scented products can trigger asthma in some people. Start with a light scent and a few fibre reeds, and keep the room well aired.
If they start to cough, wheeze or feel tight in the chest, stop using it in shared rooms. You can still keep one in a room they do not use.
What should I do if my reed diffuser is knocked over?
Clean it up straight away. The oil can damage wood and plastic. Follow these steps:
- Move people and pets away.
- Open a window if you can.
- Blot the oil with kitchen roll or a cloth. Do not rub, as this spreads it.
- Clean the surface the way its maker advises.
Do not use water, soap or heat straight away on wood or fabric. It can set an oily stain.
How do I protect furniture from reed diffuser oil?
Stand the bottle on one of these:
- A glass tray.
- A metal stand.
- Any tray that does not soak up liquid.
Do not use a wooden or fabric mat. Oil can mark some finishes, and a tray stops lasting damage.
Can I use a reed diffuser near a candle or radiator?
No. Most reed diffuser oils can catch fire, so keep them well away from candles and open flames. Heat from a radiator also makes the oil run out faster and can change the scent. A warm, busy spot also makes spills more likely.
Product and purchasing questions
How do I choose the right reed diffuser fragrance?
We make citrus, floral, woody and fresh scents. Pick by room:
- Kitchens and hallways: citrus, such as Kew Morning.
- Living rooms and guest bathrooms: floral, such as Belgravia Linen.
- Studies and living rooms in the evening: woody, such as Mayfair Library.
- Bathrooms and bedrooms: fresh, such as Hampstead Spa.
Use one reed diffuser in a small room and two in a large room.
What is the best reed diffuser scent for a bedroom?
Calm, gentle scents work best, such as:
- Fresh herbs and pine, such as our Hampstead Spa.
- Warm vanilla and cedarwood, such as our Mayfair Library.
- Lavender and chamomile.
- Sandalwood and vetiver.
Avoid very strong or sweet scents if they keep you awake.
What is the best reed diffuser scent for a bathroom?
Fresh, clean scents work well, such as:
- Citrus.
- Green herbs.
- Tea and soft musk.
- Light florals.
Bathrooms are small and often have little fresh air. So choose a light scent and use fewer fibre reeds.
Are reed diffusers a good gift?
Yes. They suit older relatives, pet owners and people who work from home. They make easy gifts for birthdays and Christmas. They also suit Mother’s Day, weddings, anniversaries and housewarmings. They work as get well and sympathy gifts too, because:
- They look good on display.
- They need no flame or power.
- The scent lasts for months.
Every IVNA London reed diffuser arrives gift boxed, and you can add a handwritten gift note in your bag. See our luxury reed diffuser gifts.
Are reed diffuser refills better value than buying a new reed diffuser?
Yes, usually. You are not paying for a new glass bottle. Our 200ml refill is £42 against £58 for a new reed diffuser, and it comes with fresh fibre reeds.
What should I expect when I first open my reed diffuser?
Here is how to set it up:
- Take out the stopper.
- Put the fibre reeds in the oil.
- Stand the bottle on a steady surface, away from windows and radiators.
- Turn the fibre reeds after 24 hours.
The scent takes 24 to 48 hours to build. It may seem faint at first and grow over the first few days. Give it time before you add fibre reeds or move it.
