Best Scented Candles UK: How to Choose by Room and Scent
The best scented candle is one that suits the room you will burn it in. Warm vanilla and amber suit living rooms. Soft lavender and musk suit bedrooms. Fresh citrus and herbs suit kitchens. Check the wax, the wick and the named notes before you buy, then choose by room.
One thing first: we make IVNA London candles, so the picks below are our own scents. Want to compare well known luxury brands on cost per burn hour? Read our guide to the best luxury scented candles UK.
Quick picks
- Best all rounder: Belgravia Linen, Earl Grey, cucumber and white musk. Clean, soft and easy to love.
- Best for a bedroom: Hampstead Spa, lemongrass, pine and cedar.
- Best fresh citrus: Kew Morning, mandarin, bergamot and vetiver.
- Best for winter evenings: Mayfair Library, vanilla, tonka and cedarwood.
- Best for a large room: a three wick candle, 760g in matt black glass, which burns for around 80 hours.
What should you check before you buy a scented candle?
The wax
Wax holds the scent and decides how evenly the candle burns. Soy, coconut and rapeseed blends are popular because they burn slowly and evenly. Our candles are vegan, with no palm oil, and are made to EN 15426, EN 15493 and BS EN 15494. Our guide to soy, paraffin and coconut wax explains the differences.
The wick
A cotton core wick burns cleanly if you trim it to about 5mm before each burn. A wick that is too long gives a big, smoky flame and shortens the life of the candle.
Named notes
Look for top, heart and base notes. A candle with a clear structure smells layered as it warms, rather than flat and sweet.
Cold throw and hot throw
Cold throw is how the candle smells unlit. Hot throw is how well the scent fills the room once you light it. A strong cold throw does not always mean a strong hot throw, so read reviews that mention the room size. See which candles have the strongest scent.
Burn time and size
Compare candles by the hours of burning you get for the price, not by the price alone. Our 30cl candle burns for around 40 hours, and our three wick candle for around 80 hours. Our guide to how long a candle burns gives typical burn times by size.
The vessel and box
A good glass and a proper gift box matter if it is a present, and the glass stays on show long after the candle has gone.
What are the best scented candles for each room?
Living room
Choose warm, rounded scents that feel welcoming without being sharp. Try Mayfair Library (vanilla, tonka and cedarwood) or Belgravia Linen (Earl Grey, cucumber and white musk).
Bedroom
Keep it soft and calm: Hampstead Spa (lemongrass, pine and cedar). Never leave a candle burning when you go to sleep. See all our scented candles.
Kitchen
Fresh, bright and green scents sit well next to cooking. Try Kew Morning (mandarin, bergamot and vetiver).
Bathroom
Clean florals and lavender work well in a small, warm room. Try Hampstead Spa or Belgravia Linen.
Hallway
The hallway is the first room guests smell, so choose something bright and welcoming. Try Kew Morning.

Candle or reed diffuser?
A candle gives a stronger burst of scent while it burns and changes the mood of a room. A reed diffuser gives steady scent all day with no flame to watch. Many people use both in the same scent: every IVNA London candle has a matching reed diffuser. Read how to pair a candle and reed diffuser.

Quick answers
What is the best scented candle in the UK?
There is no single winner. The best one has named notes you enjoy, burns evenly and suits the room you will use it in.
Which scented candle smells strongest?
Warm scents built on vanilla, amber and woods tend to fill a room most. Burn it for at least two hours so the wax melts to the edge.
What is the best candle for a bedroom?
A soft, calm scent such as lavender, musk or a light floral. Blow it out before you sleep.
Are soy wax candles better?
Soy and coconut blends burn slowly and evenly, which many people prefer. The way a maker pours and cures a candle matters as much as the wax.
How do I stop my candle tunnelling?
On the first burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the glass. See 8 fixes for tunnelling, flickering and smoke.
