Best Luxury Scented Candles UK: Handmade Candles Compared on Scent, Burn and Value

The best luxury scented candles in the UK smell strong when lit, burn cleanly and cost a fair amount for every hour of scent. We checked nine well known luxury candles on their own UK websites. Then we worked out the cost per burn hour from each brand's stated burn time. Rituals is about 50p an hour and Earl of East is the best premium value. Diptyque gives you the most famous name for about £1.05 an hour. IVNA London is our own pick: handmade in England at £42 for a 30cl candle, with around 40 hours of burn, in four scents that match our reed diffusers.

One thing first: we make IVNA London, so we have a stake in this. Our own candles are in the list, marked in bold. You can browse all our luxury scented candles before you read on.

We did not run a lab test. Instead, we read each brand's own product page and noted the price, the size and the stated burn time. Then we divided the price by the hours. Where a brand gives no figure, we write "not stated". We invented nothing.

Quick picks

  • Best cheap luxury feel: Rituals The Ritual of Sakura costs £24.90 for 290g and burns for up to 50 hours. That is about 50p an hour.
  • Best value premium candle: Earl of East costs £42 for 260ml and burns for about 60 hours. That is about 70p an hour.

  • Best for a big room: NEOM Real Luxury 3 wick costs £55 for 420g. The brand does not state a burn time.
  • Best statement piece: Trudon Ernesto costs £95 for 270g and burns for 55 to 60 hours. It is the priciest candle here.

What makes a candle luxury?

Price alone does not make a candle luxury. These six things do, and each is worth checking before you spend more.

  • Wax holds the scent and decides how clean and even the burn is. Brands mix soy, rapeseed, coconut, paraffin and beeswax in different ways. Our guide to soy vs paraffin vs coconut wax candles explains the differences.
  • The wick must suit the width of the jar. Too small, and the candle tunnels down the middle. Too big, and it smokes.
  • Fragrance load is how much scent goes into the wax. Few brands publish it, so judge a candle by its throw instead.
  • A heavy glass or ceramic vessel you can reuse adds to the price. It does not add any scent to your room.
  • Throw is how far the scent travels once the candle is lit. This is the part you are really paying for.
  • Burn time is the hours of scent you get. Divide the price by the hours, and you have a fair way to compare.

What are cold throw and hot throw?

Cold throw is what you smell from the unlit candle in its jar. Hot throw is what fills the room once the wax melts. A candle can smell lovely in the shop and weak at home, because the shop only shows you the cold throw.

Here is a simple home test. Light the candle in a closed room for two hours, then leave and walk back in later. If you notice the scent at the door, the hot throw is good. If you have to stand over the jar, it is weak for that room.

How do luxury candles compare on cost per burn hour?

The table runs from the lowest to the highest cost per hour. All prices and burn times come from each brand's own UK product page.

Candle Size Price Stated burn time Cost per burn hour Price per 100g
Rituals The Ritual of Sakura 290g £24.90 Up to 50 hours About 50p About £8.60
Earl of East Strand 260ml £42 About 60 hours About 70p Sold by ml, not grams
Diptyque Baies classic 190g £63 Around 60 hours About £1.05 About £33
IVNA London (our brand) 30cl £42 Around 40 hours About £1.05 Sold by volume, not grams
Byredo Bibliothèque 240g £72 About 60 hours About £1.20 About £30
Jo Malone London Pomegranate Noir Home Candle 200g £56 About 45 hours About £1.24 About £28
Cowshed Relax 220g £50 40 hours About £1.25 About £22.70
Trudon Ernesto classic 270g £95 55 to 60 hours About £1.58 to £1.73 About £35
NEOM Real Luxury 3 wick 420g £55 Not stated Not stated About £13
The White Company Seychelles Signature Not stated £25 Not stated Not stated Not stated

Burn time is always the brand's best case. Draughts and a long wick both cut it down. Cost per hour also says nothing about throw. A candle you cannot smell from across the room is poor value at any price.

The picks, one by one

A soft, low cost luxury candle

Rituals charges £24.90 for 290g and says the candle lasts up to 50 hours. The scent blends cherry blossom and rice milk. It is soft, gentle and easy to like.

Watch out for: a soft scent like this suits a bedroom better than a big living room, and "up to" is always the best case.

A London studio candle

Earl of East charges £42 for 260ml, with about 60 hours stated on its product page. It is a London brand known for woody and green scents in soy wax. It has the best cost per hour among the premium names.

Watch out for: Earl of East sells this candle by volume, not weight, so you cannot compare its size with the others.

The cult Paris candle

Diptyque. The 190g classic candle costs £63, and Diptyque says it burns for around 60 hours. Baies, a blend of blackcurrant leaf and rose, is the one most people know. For a famous Paris name, about £1.05 an hour is fair.

Watch out for: 190g is a small candle for a large open plan room, and you pay a lot per gram for the famous name and the jar.

An old library scent for a smaller room

Byredo charges £72 for 240g, with about 60 hours stated. Bibliothèque aims to smell like an old library, with notes of paper, peach, plum and vanilla. Byredo tells you to trim the wick to 3 to 5mm and burn it for no more than four hours at a time.

Watch out for: Byredo labels this scent "intimate diffusion". Expect a candle for a small room, not a big hall.

The classic British candle

Jo Malone London charges £56 for the 200g Home Candle and states about 45 hours. Pomegranate Noir is one of its best known scents. But the short burn time puts the cost per hour above Diptyque.

Watch out for: you pay partly for the name, so compare the hours of burn, not the shelf price.

A calm, spa style candle

Cowshed charges £50 for 220g and states 40 hours. Relax blends lavender, eucalyptus and tonka bean in a soy and mineral wax. It gives a calm, spa style scent from a British brand.

Watch out for: 40 hours is the shortest burn time in this whole list, which pushes up the cost of every hour.

The oldest French candle maker

Trudon charges £95 for 270g and states 55 to 60 hours. Ernesto is a smoky leather and tobacco scent. The glass jar is a piece to keep, from a French candle maker founded in 1643.

Watch out for: it has the highest cost per hour of any candle here, at up to about £1.73.

A three wick candle and a clean, fresh range

NEOM's Real Luxury 3 wick candle is £55 for 420g, about £13 per 100g. Its three wicks suit a bigger room. The White Company's Seychelles Signature candle is £25. Neither page gave a burn time when we checked, so we could not work out a cost per hour.

Watch out for: without a burn time, you are guessing at value. Ask the brand how long the candle lasts before you buy.

IVNA London (our brand)

Our scented candle costs £42 for a 30cl green glass tumbler and burns for around 40 hours. Our three wick candle is 760g in matt black glass. It costs £88 and burns for around 80 hours, so it suits a bigger room. Both are vegan, with no palm oil, and are made to EN 15426, EN 15493 and BS EN 15494. Everything is handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside.

Each candle matches one of our reed diffusers, so a room can smell the same by day and night. Mayfair Library is vanilla, tonka and cedarwood for living rooms. Belgravia Linen is Earl Grey, cucumber and white musk. Hampstead Spa is lemongrass, pine and cedar. Kew Morning is mandarin, bergamot and vetiver.

Where we fall short: at about £1.05 an hour, our standard candle is not the cheapest per hour here. IVNA London is a new name. On the reed diffuser side, our 200ml bottle lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average, about £15.70 a month), and a refill costs £42. Near a radiator, expect nearer 8 weeks, or about £31.40 a month.

Candle or reed diffuser?

A candle gives a strong scent for a few hours when you light it. A reed diffuser gives a softer scent all day, with no flame. Many homes use both: a reed diffuser in the hall and a candle in the living room at night. Our guide to reed diffusers vs candles vs plug ins vs wax melts compares them. Our guide on how to pair a candle and reed diffuser shows you how to match them. Or browse our reed diffusers to find a match for your candle.

How do you burn a luxury candle safely?

  • First burn: let the wax melt right to the edge of the jar. This stops tunnelling later. NEOM advises at least two hours.
  • Every burn: trim the wick to 3 to 5mm before you light the candle each time, because a long wick smokes.
  • Time limit: burn the candle for no more than four hours at a time, which is what Byredo and NEOM both advise.
  • Place: stand the candle on a heat proof surface, away from draughts, curtains, children and pets.
  • Stop: put the candle out when about 1cm of wax is left, so the glass does not overheat.
  • Never leave a lit candle alone in the room.

Do candles affect indoor air?

Every flame makes some soot and releases some compounds into the air. A short wick, no draughts and an open window after burning all help. If you have asthma or a sensitive nose, a flame free reed diffuser may suit you better. We cover the evidence in are scented candles bad for you?

Quick answers

What is the best luxury scented candle in the UK?

On cost per hour, Rituals is about 50p and Earl of East about 70p. For a famous name, Diptyque costs about £1.05 an hour. For a candle handmade in England that matches a reed diffuser in the same room, choose IVNA London at £42, also about £1.05 an hour.

How long should a luxury candle burn?

The candles we checked state 40 to 60 hours. Draughts and long wicks will cut that figure.

Why can't I smell my expensive candle?

The room may be too big, the first burn too short, or you may be nose blind to the scent. Try it in a smaller room with the door closed.
