Can You Put Disinfectant in a Reed Diffuser?

We don't recommend it. Household disinfectant is made to be diluted in water for cleaning, not to sit in a reed diffuser. Mixed with water it does not travel up fibre reeds well, and neat it was never designed to sit in an open bottle in your living room. Use a proper reed diffuser refill instead, because it is made for the job.

Why do people try it?

Scented disinfectants smell fresh, they are cheap, and disinfectant reed diffuser hacks have spread on social media, so it is easy to see the appeal. If you want a reed diffuser made for the job, with a clear safety label, see our guide to British made reed diffusers.

Why doesn't it work well?

  • Water does not wick. Most hacks dilute disinfectant in water, but fibre reeds are made for thin, oil based liquids. The water sits in the bottle and the scent stays weak.
  • It fades fast. Disinfectants are made to scent a floor or a cloth for a short time, not a room for weeks.
  • It can clog the fibre reeds, so they stop working even when you switch back to proper oil.

Is it safe?

Household disinfectants carry their own hazard labels. They are meant to be diluted, used for cleaning, then put away. Leaving one in an open bottle in a room is not how it is designed to be used. That matters even more if you have pets or small children who might knock it over.

Always read the label and follow the maker's instructions for any cleaning product you use at home.

What are better cheap ways to freshen a room?

  • Open the windows for ten minutes a day to let fresh air in.
  • Simmer water with citrus peel and spices on the hob for a quick lift.
  • Use disinfectant as intended to clean floors, bins and surfaces. That removes the smell at the source.

What should you use in a reed diffuser instead?

Use a reed diffuser refill oil, which is made to climb the fibre reeds and release fragrance steadily. Our guides explain what you can refill a reed diffuser with and how to refill it properly.
