How Long Do Reed Diffusers Last? And How to Make Yours Last Longer

Most reed diffusers are sold as lasting between two and four months. In a real UK home, the actual time depends on the bottle size, how many fibre reeds you use, and how warm and draughty the room is. Radiators can cut a reed diffuser's life to a few weeks, while fewer fibre reeds, a cool spot and fresh fibre reeds make it last much longer. If you want scent that stays noticeable, see our guide to strong reed diffusers.

How long do most reed diffusers last?

Brands measure lifespan in different ways, so treat any figure as a guide. As a rough rule, a larger bottle lasts longer, and the same bottle lasts longer with fewer fibre reeds in a cooler room. Some well known brands state figures such as "up to 12 weeks" for their standard size.

The fair question to ask any brand is this: in what room, at what temperature, and with how many fibre reeds? A figure without that context is hard to compare with anything else.

Why do some reed diffusers dry up in a month?

"Dried up in a month" is one of the most common complaints in UK reviews, and these are the usual causes:

  • Radiators and central heating. Heat speeds up evaporation a lot, so a reed diffuser that lasts three months in a cool hallway can run dry in weeks next to a radiator in winter.
  • Sunny windowsills. Direct sun heats the bottle and the oil inside it.
  • Too many fibre reeds. The more fibre reeds you use, the more oil evaporates.
  • Draughts. Moving air carries off more oil from the tips of the fibre reeds.
  • Flipping too often. Each flip releases a burst of scent and uses more oil.

Why do some stop working while still full?

The opposite problem is a bottle that is half full, but you can't smell anything. That is usually down to clogged fibre reeds, or you have gone nose blind to it, so see 7 fixes that work.

How can you make a reed diffuser last longer?

  1. Keep it away from radiators and sun. This is the single biggest factor in how long it lasts.
  2. Use fewer fibre reeds in small rooms. Bathrooms and hallways do not need them all to smell lovely.
  3. Flip weekly, not daily. Only flip more often if you need a stronger scent for a while.
  4. Keep it out of draughts.
  5. Put the stopper back when away. If you are going on holiday, take the fibre reeds out and seal the bottle.
  6. Replace fibre reeds when you refill. Fresh fibre reeds work efficiently because they draw the oil up freely.
  7. Store unopened bottles somewhere cool and dark.

Do reed diffusers expire?

Unopened, a sealed reed diffuser keeps well for a long time if stored cool and out of sun, though the scent can slowly change over years. Once opened, the top notes fade first, and if a reed diffuser starts to smell stale or "off", the oil may have oxidised, so replace it.

How long do the fibre reeds last?

Fibre reeds last for one bottle, so when you refill or open a new bottle, use fresh fibre reeds. Old fibre reeds are clogged with thickened oil and dust, which stops them working well.

Our approach

We would rather give you an honest figure than a big one. Each IVNA London reed diffuser page tells you the rooms it suits and how to place it so it lasts.

Quick answers

How long does a 100ml reed diffuser last?

It often lasts around two to three months in a cool room with some fibre reeds removed, and less near heat or with all fibre reeds in.

How long do reed diffusers last in winter?

They often last less, because central heating speeds up evaporation, so keep them well away from radiators.

Should I take fibre reeds out to make it last longer?

Yes, because fewer fibre reeds means slower evaporation, although you will get a lighter scent.

Frequently asked questions

Do reed diffusers go out of date if unopened?

Not quickly. Store them upright, sealed and out of sunlight. The scent may soften after a year or two.

When should I refill my reed diffuser?

When the oil is almost gone, or when the scent has faded even after flipping fresh fibre reeds.

How often should reed diffuser sticks be replaced?

Every two to three months, or with each refill. Old fibre reeds clog and carry less scent.

How long does an Ivna reed diffuser last?

Up to 24 weeks, and around 16 weeks on average in a normal room. Heat, sunlight and more fibre reeds make it run out faster.

When do reed diffusers stop working?

When the oil runs low or the fibre reeds clog. Fresh fibre reeds often bring the scent back before the oil runs out.
