Strongest Reed Diffusers UK: How to Choose One That Fills a Room

The strongest smelling reed diffuser for a UK home is the one whose blend, base, fibre reeds and bottle size suit your room. Price alone tells you little. Trudon Cyrnos threw scent the furthest in one shop test. Diptyque Figuier had the strongest throw in the Guardian's test. For less, testers said Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir and Airy Aroma fill large rooms. IVNA London reed diffusers last up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average), at about £15.70 a month.

One thing first: we make IVNA London, so we have a stake. Our reed diffuser is in bold in the tables. We do not claim it is the strongest, and we say where it falls short. We did not run lab tests either. Instead, we gathered what other testers published.

Want to go straight to the shop? Each of our strong, long lasting reed diffusers lists the rooms it suits. For big rooms, see our strong reed diffusers for large rooms.

Quick picks

  • Best throw in a published test: Trudon Cyrnos was the only reed diffuser to score 10 out of 10 in Candle Delirium's test. It costs about £20.70 a month.
  • Strongest in a UK newspaper test: The Guardian found Diptyque Figuier had the most powerful throw of 50 products. It costs about £33.30 a month.
  • Best strong designer scent: The Guardian called Jo Malone London Pomegranate Noir powerful, and said it suits a larger room. It costs about £21.40 a month.
  • Best strong scent under £40: The Guardian said Airy Aroma Forest Breath can scent a large room. It costs about £9.90 a month.
  • Best cheap test: Aldi Hotel Collection Pomegranate has a good throw for about £5, but it lasts only 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Best handmade in England: IVNA London costs £58 for 200ml and lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average). Large open plan rooms need two bottles.

Why is "strongest" hard to judge?

Since 2021, IFRA safety rules have capped many ingredients in reed diffusers. So no brand that follows them can just pour in more scent. Strength now comes from how well a reed diffuser is made and how well you use it. Read more in why reed diffusers got weaker.

Most "tested" guides lived with each reed diffuser for 2 days to 4 weeks. One US shop measured distance instead, and we borrow its idea below.

What makes a reed diffuser strong?

1. The blend

People notice bright top notes like citrus and herbs fast. But they fade fastest and struggle to carry across a big room. Candle Delirium found citrus the hardest family to project. Aroma Reed Diffusers says woody scents linger longer than citrus. Warm base notes like amber, woods, musk and vanilla hang in the air. So the best blends have both. Look for brands that list top, heart and base notes.

2. The base liquid

The base carries the scent up the fibre reeds, so it shapes how strong a reed diffuser smells. Danbury & Lovejoy says alcohol bases push scent hard at first, then fade, and can smell sharp. It says glycol (DPG) bases suit UK homes better. Water based ones tend to be gentler.

3. The fibre reeds

Fibre reeds wick evenly and push scent out more. Rattan absorbs well but clogs sooner. Guides disagree on thickness. Real Homes says thicker fibre reeds give a stronger scent, but one brand says thin fibre reeds do. All agree that fresh fibre reeds beat old ones. See do longer fibre reeds make a reed diffuser stronger?

4. Bottle size and fibre reed count

More fibre reeds means more surface for scent to leave from. A bigger bottle can feed more fibre reeds for longer. Aroma Reed Diffusers says a 100ml bottle suits rooms under about 23 square metres. Above about 46 square metres, it says use two. Our best large reed diffusers guide compares the big bottles.

5. The room

The same reed diffuser smells far stronger in a small hallway than in an open plan kitchen with the back door open. Draughts carry scent away. Heat boosts scent but empties the bottle faster. That is why many UK buyers say reed diffusers "only work in small rooms".

Which strong reed diffusers did testers rate?

These are the reed diffusers that published guides singled out for strength. Cost per month is the price divided by the months each bottle lasts.

Reed diffuser Who rated it strong Size and price Lifespan Cost per month
Trudon Cyrnos Candle Delirium: 10 out of 10 for throw, the only one 350ml, about £145 6 to 8 months (guides) £20.70
Diptyque Figuier The Guardian: most powerful throw of all tested 200ml, about £150 4 to 5 months (guides) £33.30
Jo Malone London Pomegranate Noir The Guardian: powerful throw, one for a larger room 165ml, about £75 3 to 4 months (guides) £21.40
Airy Aroma Forest Breath The Guardian: can scent a large room 250ml, about £40 About 4 months (estimate) £9.90
Aldi Hotel Collection Pomegranate The Guardian: good throw, not overwhelming 100ml, about £5 6 to 8 weeks (guides) £3
IVNA London (our brand) Our own description: strong and long lasting. Not independently tested. 200ml, £58 Up to 24 weeks, avg 16 (brand) £15.70

Heat changes all of these. Near a radiator, expect a bottle to run dry in about half the time. For lifespan in more depth, read our longest lasting reed diffusers guide.

A big 350ml vessel with full marks for throw

Trudon Cyrnos puts herbs, fig, pine and cedar over musk in a 350ml vessel. It was the only one of 12 reed diffusers to score full marks for throw in Candle Delirium's showroom test. At 6 to 8 months, it costs less per month than its price suggests.

Watch out for: it costs about £145 up front. One Homes & Gardens tester uses fewer fibre reeds with Trudon because it is so strong.

A green fig scent that fills a large room

Diptyque Figuier. A green, woody fig scent. The Guardian said it filled a large room and drifted next door.

Watch out for: it is the dearest per month here at about £33. The Guardian's tester also knocked the bottle over, so keep it away from pets and elbows.

A fruity, smoky scent with a powerful throw

Jo Malone London Pomegranate Noir. Fruity pomegranate over smoky wood. The Guardian said it has a powerful throw and suits a larger room.

Watch out for: the scent is heady and will not suit everyone, so try it in a shop first if you can.

Rose, honey and sandalwood in a big bottle

Airy Aroma blends rose and honey with sandalwood and sage, in a 250ml bottle for about £40. The Guardian said it can scent a large room.

Watch out for: the brand publishes no lifespan, so our four months is an estimate from the bottle size.

Aldi Hotel Collection Pomegranate gives you a good throw for about £5. Watch out for: it fades in 6 to 8 weeks, and the scent is simpler than the dearer picks.

How strong should a reed diffuser be for each room?

Match the bottle and fibre reeds to the room before you call a reed diffuser weak. The fibre reed counts below follow Affinati, and the room sizes follow Aroma Reed Diffusers.

Room Bottle Fibre reeds Scents that carry best
Bathroom or loo 100ml 4 to 6 Citrus and herbs
Bedroom 100ml 5 to 7 Soft florals, vanilla
Hallway 100ml to 200ml 6 to 8 Florals, amber
Living room under about 23 sq m 100ml or more 8 or more Amber, woods, musk
Large or open plan room over about 46 sq m Two bottles, one at each end All fibre reeds A warm base plus a bright top

How can you test a reed diffuser's strength at home?

Candle Delirium judged each reed diffuser on one question: can you smell it from 12 feet away after 48 hours? Anyone can repeat that test, so here is our home version.

  1. Put the reed diffuser where it will live, at about waist height, so you test it in its real spot.
  2. Add the fibre reeds and leave it for 48 hours. The Guardian says a new reed diffuser takes 24 to 36 hours to reach full strength.
  3. Flip the fibre reeds once to give the scent a fresh start before you judge it.
  4. Leave the room, or go outside, for 10 minutes to reset your nose.
  5. Walk back in and stop about 12 feet away, about four long strides.
  6. Score it: if you notice it from 12 feet, it is strong. If only close up, it is gentle. If not at all, it needs a fix.
  7. Repeat at two weeks and six weeks to see how well it holds as the oil level drops.

Ask a visitor too, as you get used to your own home's smell. If your reed diffuser fails the test even with fresh fibre reeds, read why can't I smell my reed diffuser?

How do you make any reed diffuser stronger?

  1. Add fibre reeds: use all of them in a big room, and fewer in a small one.
  2. Flip about once a week: each flip gives a boost, but it also uses oil faster.
  3. Use fresh fibre reeds with each new bottle: old fibre reeds clog, so never move fibre reeds to a different oil.
  4. Place it where people walk: a hallway or a path through the room. A gentle air flow helps, but a strong draught does not.
  5. Keep it off the radiator: heat makes it louder for a while, then it runs dry in half the time.
  6. Keep it topped up: throw drops as the oil runs low, so a fuller bottle smells stronger.
  7. Use two in large rooms: put one at each end, not both in one corner, so the scent meets in the middle.

How strong are IVNA London reed diffusers?

Our reed diffusers come in a 200ml green glass bottle and last up to 24 weeks, around 16 weeks on average. They are handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside. They are made from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base and vegan.

Which of our scents read strongest? It depends on what you mean by strong:

  • Noticed fastest: Kew Morning (mandarin, bergamot and vetiver) is a fresh citrus. It works best in kitchens and hallways.
  • Lingers longest: Mayfair Library (vanilla, tonka and cedarwood) has a warm base that holds in the air. It works best in living rooms and studies.
  • Green and herbal: Hampstead Spa (lemongrass, pine and cedar) suits bathrooms and bedrooms.
  • Softer: Belgravia Linen (Earl Grey, cucumber and white musk) is gentler. It suits living rooms and guest bathrooms.

Where we fall short: we do not claim to be the strongest, and no one has tested us side by side with Trudon or Diptyque. We sell one size, 200ml, so a large or open plan room needs two bottles. That is about £31.40 a month. Up to 24 weeks is the most you can expect, and around 16 weeks is an average. Near a radiator, expect a bottle to run dry sooner. A refill with a fresh set of fibre reeds costs £42, or about £11.40 a month.

Quick answers

What is the strongest smelling reed diffuser in the UK?

In published tests, Trudon Cyrnos and Diptyque Figuier came out strongest. Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir and Airy Aroma also got strong notes. But the right bottle and fibre reeds for your room matter as much as the brand.

Do more expensive reed diffusers smell stronger?

Not always. Candle Delirium found some mid priced reed diffusers beat dearer ones on throw. Some luxury brands are also gentle by design. They aim for a quiet scent, not a loud one.

Why does my reed diffuser smell strong at first, then fade?

Bright top notes go first. Alcohol bases also push hard early, then drop. Old fibre reeds clog, and throw falls as the oil runs low. Fresh fibre reeds and a top up often help.
