Why Does My House Smell Even When It's Clean?

A clean house can still smell because the smell hides in places that cleaning misses, such as fabrics, drains, damp, bins, washing machines and still air. Find the source first, because fragrance is the finishing layer rather than the fix.

We make home fragrance, so it might seem odd for us to say this, but a reed diffuser on top of a damp smell just gives you a damp smell with a scent on it. Fix the cause first and then add fragrance. When you get there, our guide to reed diffuser sets shows how to scent each room.

What are the seven hidden causes?

1. Soft furnishings

Sofas, cushions, curtains, rugs and throws soak up cooking, pet and body smells, and while surfaces look clean, fabric can hold odour for weeks.

Fix: wash covers and throws monthly, vacuum upholstery weekly, and air your curtains by opening the windows.

2. Damp and poor ventilation

A musty smell is the classic sign of damp, and it is common in older UK homes, in bathrooms without extractor fans and wherever washing dries indoors.

Fix: open windows daily, run extractor fans, and dry washing near an open window or use a dehumidifier. Look for dark patches in corners, behind furniture and around windows. If the damp keeps coming back, it needs a professional check.

3. Drains and sink traps

If your bathroom or kitchen smells even with no blockage, the U bend or the drain can hold trapped food, hair and soap.

Fix: run very hot tap water down the drains weekly, but avoid boiling water, which can damage plastic pipe joints. Clean the plug hole and overflow too. If a sink or shower is rarely used, run water through it now and then so the trap stays full and sewer smells cannot rise up.

4. The washing machine and dishwasher

Door seals and filters trap water and residue, and towels that come out smelling "off" are a sure sign of it.

Fix: wipe the seal, clean the filter and run an empty hot wash monthly, then leave the door open between washes so it can dry.

5. Bins and fridges

Even an empty bin can smell if liquid has leaked under the bag, and fridge seals and drip trays quietly hold on to old spills.

Fix: wash the bin monthly and wipe the fridge seals whenever you clean the kitchen.

6. Pets

You go nose blind to your own pets, while their beds, blankets and favourite spots on the sofa hold on to the smell.

Fix: wash pet bedding weekly, and find more help in our dog owner's guide.

7. Still air

Modern homes are well sealed, which keeps heat in but also keeps smells in, so rooms kept closed, like spare bedrooms, can start to smell stale.

Fix: open windows for 10 minutes a day and leave internal doors open whenever you can.

How do you find the source of a smell?

  1. Go outside for 15 minutes so your nose has time to reset.
  2. Walk back in slowly, and move through the house room by room.
  3. Note where the smell is strongest, and get close to fabrics, drains and corners.
  4. Ask a friend to check, because you may be nose blind to it.

When should you worry about a smell?

Most home smells are harmless, but you should get help straight away if you smell any of the following:

  • Gas or rotten eggs: leave the house and call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.
  • Burning or fishy smells near sockets: this can be an electrical fault, so call an electrician.
  • Persistent sewage: call a plumber to find and fix the problem.
  • Musty smell with visible mould: treat the damp and improve the ventilation in that room.

When should you add fragrance?

Once the base is clean, a light and constant scent makes the home feel finished. Use a fresh scent in kitchens and bathrooms and a warmer one in living spaces. A reed diffuser works all day without a flame or plug.

Quick answers

How do I stop my house smelling musty?

Musty means moisture, so ventilate daily, run extractor fans, dry washing properly and deal with any damp patches.

Why does my bathroom smell when there is no blockage?

It is usually a dirty plug hole, overflow or drain trap, or a dry trap in a rarely used sink, so clean and flush them all.

Can a reed diffuser get rid of smells?

No, because it adds a pleasant scent on top and does nothing to remove the cause, so fix the source first.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my house smell musty?

A musty smell almost always means damp: moisture in walls, carpets, soft furnishings or behind furniture that sits against cold outside walls. Open windows for 10 minutes a day, run extractor fans and check for condensation before you add any scent.

Why does my house smell damp when it rains?

Rain raises humidity indoors and shows up any spot where water gets in, such as a leaking gutter, blocked air brick or a cold wall. If the smell only comes with rain, look outside the house first.

Why does my house smell stale?

Stale air is usually air that has not moved. Trapped cooking smells, fabrics and closed windows build up a flat smell your nose stops noticing. Air the house daily, wash throws and cushion covers, then add one steady scent.

Why does my house never smell fresh?

Most homes need three things: moving air, clean fabrics and a light background scent. Miss any one and the house smells flat. Read how to make your house smell good all the time.

Why does my house smell of drains?

A drain smell usually means a dried out trap in a sink, shower or unused toilet, or a blocked vent. Run water in every outlet weekly. If it persists, call a plumber. Scent will not fix it.

Why does my house smell musty but there is no mould?

Hidden damp often has no visible mould. Check under sinks, behind wardrobes on outside walls and in carpets near windows. A cheap humidity meter helps: aim for 40 to 60 percent.

Will a reed diffuser get rid of a musty smell?

No. A reed diffuser adds a pleasant scent but does not remove damp. Fix the moisture first, then a reed diffuser keeps the room smelling fresh day to day.

Why does my house smell musty after being away?

Damp and still air build up while the heating is off. See why your house smells when you come home.
