Why Does My House Smell When I Come Home After Being Away?
A house smells when you come home because the air has not moved, damp has built up and small smells from drains, bins and fabrics have had days to collect. Your nose has also reset while you were away, so you notice your home the way a guest does. Here are the usual causes, the fix for each and how to come home to a fresh house next time.
1. Still air
With windows shut and nobody moving between rooms, the air sits still, so cooking smells, fabric smells and the scent of the house itself build up. This is the flat, stale smell most people notice first. Once the air is clear, our guide to the best reed diffuser sets shows how to scent the whole house.
Fix: open windows at opposite ends of the house for 10 to 15 minutes, because a through draught clears stale air faster than one open window.
2. Damp
If the heating was off, walls and fabrics cool down and hold more moisture. That gives the musty smell many people notice after a holiday, especially in autumn and winter or after heavy rain.
Fix: air the house, put the heating on low for a few hours and check for condensation on windows. If the musty smell stays for days, read why your house smells musty even when it is clean.
3. Dry drains
Every sink, shower and toilet has a trap of water that blocks smells from the drain. After a week or two, especially in warm weather, a little used trap can dry out and let a drain smell into the room.
Fix: run every tap and flush every toilet for 30 seconds when you get home. The smell should clear within an hour, and if it does not, call a plumber.
4. Bins, fridge and dishwasher
Food waste left in a kitchen bin, a fridge with something past its date or a closed dishwasher with dirty plates will smell after a few days.
Fix: empty the bins, wipe the fridge and run the dishwasher. Next time, empty them before you leave and prop the dishwasher door open a little.
5. Your nose has reset
Nose blindness means you stop noticing the everyday smell of your own home. After a few days away, your nose resets, so you smell the house clearly. This is useful, because it tells you what guests notice. Read more in nose blind at home.
What should you do before you go away?
Most of the smell you meet at the door starts in the last hour before you leave, so a short routine makes a big difference. Work through this list on the morning you go, and the house has far less to build up while it is shut.
- Take out every bin, including the food waste caddy, and rinse the kitchen bin with warm soapy water.
- Clear the fridge of milk, soft fruit, salad and opened jars, and wipe up any spills on the shelves.
- Run the dishwasher empty or with clean plates only, then leave the door ajar so it can dry.
- Leave the washing machine door and the detergent drawer open, so the seal dries rather than turning musty.
- Clean the lint filter in the tumble dryer and wash the grease filter in the cooker hood if it is due.
- Put the plugs in sinks and baths you rarely use, which slows down how fast their traps dry out.
- In cold months, leave the heating on a low setting so rooms do not get cold and damp.
- Flip the fibre reeds in every reed diffuser just before you leave, because freshly soaked fibre reeds give off the most scent in the days that follow.
For a trip of more than two weeks, ask a neighbour or friend to run the taps and flush the toilets once a week. It takes them five minutes and keeps every drain trap topped up. Once the kitchen is clear, the Kew Morning reed diffuser of mandarin, bergamot and vetiver keeps it feeling fresh and awake.
How do you come home to a fresh house?
- Empty bins, fridge leftovers and the dishwasher before you leave.
- Leave internal doors open so air can move.
- Leave a trickle vent or window lock slightly open if it is safe to do so.
- Leave a reed diffuser in the hallway. It keeps working while you are away, with no flame and no plug, so the first breath through the door is a scent you chose. Our Kew Morning reed diffuser suits hallways, and its fresh citrus makes the space feel light and uplifted.
To cover more than the hallway, our reed diffuser Home Sets let you mix any three scents for £159, or five for £250. Each reed diffuser is made from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base and is vegan.
What should you do in the first 10 minutes back?
Before you unpack, give the house a quick reset. This order clears the air fastest, and it helps you spot any real problem early.
- Open windows at both ends of the house and leave internal doors open, so a through draught can start moving the air.
- Run every tap and flush every toilet for 30 seconds to refill the drain traps.
- Check the fridge and the bins, and take anything that smells straight outside.
- Put the heating on low for a few hours if the house feels cold or damp.
- Check window sills and the corners of cold rooms for condensation or dark spots of mould.
- Flip the fibre reeds in the hallway reed diffuser, so the scent is fresh again as the stale air clears.
After about 15 minutes, close the windows and step outside for a moment, then walk back in. Your nose will tell you whether the house smells fresh, or whether one room still needs attention. A drain smell that stays for more than an hour, or a musty smell that returns every time, points to a problem to fix rather than air.
When is scent not the answer?
A reed diffuser makes a clean home smell lovely, but it will not fix damp, drains or a gas smell. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
