Best Large Reed Diffusers UK: 250ml to 1 Litre Bottles for Big Rooms Compared
The best large reed diffuser for a big UK room is the one that gives you the most oil per pound, in a scent strong enough to carry across the whole space. On cost, Candlelight's 1 litre bottle wins at about £2.50 a month, while Rituals gives you 250ml for about £8.70 a month. For throw in a huge space, Trudon is the brand that a US showroom test rated highest. IVNA London makes a 200ml bottle for £58, which works out at about £15.70 a month. For a very big room we suggest two of ours at opposite ends.
A quick note first: we make IVNA London, so we have a stake here, and our own row is shown in bold in the tables. We use the same maths for our bottles as for everyone else, and we tell you clearly where we fall short.
This guide compares large bottles and sits within our wider guide to the strongest smelling reed diffusers. If you want to know where to put a reed diffuser in a big room, read our guide to the best reed diffuser for a large room, because we do not repeat that advice here. Our own strong, long lasting reed diffusers appear in the table too, next to all the others.
Quick picks
- Best cost per month: Candlelight Large gives you 1 litre for about £26, and the brand says a bottle lasts 9 to 12 months, which works out at about £2.50 a month.
- Best value big bottle under £40: Rituals The Ritual of Sakura gives you 250ml for £34.90, which comes to about £8.70 a month.
- Best cheap refill: ROOMOI Vin Noble gives you 500ml for about £30, and a matching refill bottle costs about £18.
- Best luxury refill: Dr. Vranjes gives you 250ml for about £70, with a larger 500ml refill available for about £82.
- Best throw for very big spaces: Trudon holds 350ml and lasts 6 to 8 months, which comes to about £20.70 a month.
- Longest lasting luxury bottle: Fornasetti holds 500ml, and guides say a single bottle should last somewhere around 8 to 12 months.
- Best for scent at both ends of a room: IVNA London sells a 200ml bottle for £58, about £15.70 a month. Two bottles, one at each end, come to about £31.40 a month, and every bottle is handmade in England.
If you want scent at both ends of a big room, start with our reed diffuser Home Sets, where 3 reed diffusers cost £159 and 5 cost £250, in any mix of scents.
When is 100ml not enough?
Start with your floor area: measure the length and the width of the room in metres, then multiply the two numbers together. For example, a room measuring 5 metres by 4.5 metres gives you a floor area of 22.5 sq m.
Aroma Reed Diffusers gives a simple rule used across the trade: a 100ml bottle suits a room under about 23 sq m, and above about 46 sq m you should use two reed diffusers. It is a rule of thumb rather than a lab result, but it matches what most other UK guides say about room size.
| Floor area | What we suggest |
|---|---|
| Under about 23 sq m | One 100ml bottle is enough |
| About 23 to 46 sq m | One 200ml to 500ml bottle, or two 100ml bottles |
| Over about 46 sq m, or open plan | Two reed diffusers, one at each end |
The middle band is our own reading of that rule, and for more detail on bottle sizes you can see our reed diffuser room size guide.
How do large reed diffusers compare?
Here are nine big bottles sold in the UK, plus ours for comparison, sorted by cost per month. Cost per month is the price of the bottle divided by the number of months that each bottle should last.
Each lifespan shows where the figure came from: (Brand) is the brand's own "up to" or average claim, while (Guides) is the middle of the range that UK buying guides give. (Estimate) is our own figure where nobody publishes one, and for those we assume about 7 weeks per 100ml in a heated UK room, scaled up by bottle size. Big cheap bottles may use a lighter blend, so please treat those estimates as a best case.
| Reed diffuser | Size and price | Lifespan | Cost per month | Refill |

| Candlelight Large | 1000ml, about £26 | 9 to 12 months (brand) | About £2.50 | Check brand site |
| ROOMOI Vin Noble | 500ml, about £30 | About 35 weeks (estimate) | About £3.70 | Yes, about £18 |
| Dunelm | 200ml, about £12 | About 14 weeks (estimate) | About £3.70 | Spare fibre reeds, 10 for £1 |
| Next Country Luxe | 400ml, about £34 | About 28 weeks (estimate) | About £5.30 | Yes, about £26 |
| Rituals The Ritual of Sakura | 250ml, £34.90 | About 4 months (estimate) | About £8.70 | Yes |
| Airy Aroma Forest Breath | 250ml, about £40 | About 4 months (estimate) | About £9.90 | Check brand site |
| IVNA London (our brand) | 200ml, £58 | Up to 24 weeks, avg 16 (brand) | About £15.70 | Yes, 200ml with fibre reeds £42 |
| Dr. Vranjes Rosso Nobile | 250ml, about £70 | About 4 months (estimate) | About £17.40 | Yes, 500ml about £82 |
| Trudon | 350ml, about £145 | 6 to 8 months (guides) | About £20.70 | Yes |
| Fornasetti | 500ml, about £225 | 8 to 12 months (guides) | About £22.50 | Check brand site |
Dunelm is only 200ml, but we kept it in because it is the cheapest way to try a bigger bottle before you commit. Heat can halve any of these lifespans, so a bottle sitting near a radiator in winter may cost twice as much each month.
One big bottle or two small ones?
One big bottle
- It is cheaper per ml, because a litre for about £26 costs far less each month than two 100ml bottles.
- You get fewer top ups, because there is only one bottle and one set of fibre reeds to flip.
- All the scent starts from one spot, so in a long room the far end may smell faint.
Two 100ml bottles at opposite ends
- Scent starts from two spots, so it fills a long or L shaped room more evenly than one bottle can.
- Each bottle can sit near the part of the room you use most, such as the sofa end and the dining end.
- It costs more per month, and you have two separate bottles and two sets of fibre reeds to look after.
Our view is that in a square room up to about 46 sq m, one big bottle is the better buy, but above that size, or in an open plan kitchen diner, two bottles work better. Aroma Reed Diffusers gives the same advice for rooms over about 46 sq m, which is where one bottle on its own starts to fall short. You can also put one big bottle at one end and a 100ml bottle at the other, using the same scent in both.
Do wide necks and more fibre reeds help?
Big bottles often come with wide necks and lots of fibre reeds, which helps the scent in some ways and hurts it in others.
A wide neck lets the fibre reeds fan out, so more of each fibre reed meets the air and the throw gets stronger. But more oil is also open to the air, so the bottle can empty faster, and Ideal Home prefers narrow necked bottles for this reason. Treat it as a trade off to weigh up against your own room rather than as a firm rule to follow.
The number of fibre reeds matters more, and Real Homes notes that more fibre reeds will empty the bottle faster. Affinati suggests 8 or more fibre reeds in a lounge, or two reed diffusers, while Homes & Gardens suggests 5 or more fibre reeds in a living room. For a big room, start with all the fibre reeds in the bottle, and if the scent is too much after two days, take a few out.
The picks in detail
The 1 litre budget bottle (about £2.50 a month)
Candlelight Large. You get 1 litre for about £26, and the brand says a bottle lasts 9 to 12 months, so no other bottle here costs less per month.
Watch out for: the lifespan is the brand's own best case, all the scent comes from one spot, and a full litre bottle is heavy to move around.
A big 500ml bottle with a cheap refill (about £3.70 a month)
ROOMOI publishes no lifespan, so our figure is an estimate, but you do get a big 500ml bottle for about £30. The refill costs about £18, which The Fragrance Cabinet puts at about £3.60 per 100ml, and that makes it one of the cheapest refills we found.
Watch out for: there is no published lifespan, and our estimate may turn out too high if the blend is light.
The low risk big bottle (about £3.70 a month)
Dunelm. For a low risk way to find out whether a bigger bottle suits your room, Dunelm gives you 200ml for about £12. Spare fibre reeds are cheap too if you want to swap them later, at 10 for £1.
Watch out for: at 200ml it is the smallest bottle here, and Dunelm gives no lifespan, so our figure is an estimate.
A 400ml high street bottle with a refill (about £5.30 a month)
Next Country Luxe gives you 400ml for about £34, and a refill bottle for the same scent costs about £26.
Watch out for: Next gives no lifespan for this bottle, so our figure is only an estimate.
Soft cherry blossom with refills (about £8.70 a month)
Rituals The Ritual of Sakura. This soft cherry blossom scent has refills on sale for when the bottle runs dry, and you get 250ml for £34.90.
Watch out for: Rituals gives no lifespan, so our figure is an estimate based on the size of the bottle.
A woody scent for a big room (about £9.90 a month)
Airy Aroma Forest Breath. Aroma Reed Diffusers says woody scents linger longer than citrus scents, which helps in a big room, and this woody bottle gives you 250ml for about £40.
Watch out for: there is no published lifespan, so check whether refills are sold before you buy.
Best refill value (about £17.40 a month)
Dr. Vranjes Rosso Nobile. The refill is where this one makes sense, since the first bottle gives you 250ml for about £70. The 500ml refill costs about £82 and should run for around eight months by our estimate, which brings the later months down to about £10.
Watch out for: the first bottle is dear per month, and the saving only arrives once you start buying the refill.
Full marks for throw (about £20.70 a month)
Trudon. You get 350ml for about £145, and guides put its lifespan at 6 to 8 months. In a test by US retailer Candle Delirium, each reed diffuser sat in a 1,200 sq ft showroom, and Trudon Cyrnos was the only one to score 10 out of 10 for throw.
Watch out for: that result came from one retailer's test rather than a lab, and you pay the full £145.
The longest lasting (about £22.50 a month)
Fornasetti. Guides say it lasts 8 to 12 months, and you get 500ml in a hand decorated porcelain vessel for about £225. Buy it if the bottle itself is part of the look you want for the room, rather than only buying it for the scent.
Watch out for: it has the highest price in this guide, and the refill details are unclear.
IVNA London (about £15.70 a month). Our brand.
Our bottle holds 200ml and costs £58. It lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average), which is about £15.70 a month. For a very big room, we suggest two bottles at opposite ends, which costs £116, or about £31.40 a month. Our reed diffusers are handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside. The formula is made from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base and is vegan.
For a big living room, Mayfair Library, our vanilla, tonka and cedarwood reed diffuser, is warm. Belgravia Linen, our Earl Grey, cucumber and white musk reed diffuser, is softer, while Kew Morning, our mandarin, bergamot and vetiver reed diffuser, is fresh and bright for a big kitchen diner. To scent the whole home, our Home Sets let you mix any 3 reed diffusers for £159 or 5 for £250. You can also buy a reed diffuser and a refill in the same scent as our Reed Diffuser and Refill Set for £92. For more on living rooms, see our guide to strong reed diffusers for living rooms, and for a wider view, read our best reed diffusers for UK homes.
Where we fall short: we have no bottle larger than 200ml, and one big high street bottle costs far less per month than ours. Also, 16 weeks is an average, and near a radiator you should expect it to run out sooner. Our 200ml refill with a fresh set of fibre reeds costs £42, about £11.40 a month. IVNA London is a new name.
How do you get the most from a big bottle?
- Give it two days, because The Guardian says a new reed diffuser takes 24 to 36 hours to reach full strength, so wait until then before you judge it.
- Flip weekly at most, as Affinati suggests flipping every 5 to 7 days in big rooms, and Ziracle warns that flipping more often just burns through oil.
- Keep it off the radiator, because heat is the fastest way to halve the lifespan of any bottle, whatever its size.
- Change fibre reeds every 4 to 6 months, which is the Homes & Gardens advice. On a bottle that lasts a year, clogged fibre reeds are the main reason the scent fades, so never reuse old fibre reeds in a new oil.
- Top up with care and fill only two thirds to three quarters full, as Real Homes says, and before you buy big, read is a 1 litre refill worth it?
If you still have questions after all that, you will find more answers in our reed diffuser FAQs.
Quick answers
What size reed diffuser do I need for a large room?
Under about 23 sq m, a 100ml bottle is enough, and between about 23 and 46 sq m you should go for 200ml to 500ml, or two 100ml bottles. Above about 46 sq m, use two reed diffusers, with one at each end of the room.
Is one big reed diffuser better than two small ones?
One big bottle is cheaper per month, but two bottles at opposite ends spread scent more evenly in a long or open plan room, so pick by the shape of the room.
How long does a 1 litre reed diffuser last?
Candlelight says its 1 litre bottle lasts 9 to 12 months, but heat, draughts and a full set of fibre reeds will all cut that figure.
Which large reed diffuser has the strongest throw?
In one US retailer's showroom test, Trudon Cyrnos was the only reed diffuser to score 10 out of 10 for throw. Our guide to the strongest smelling reed diffusers has more on how the other brands compare for throw.
Does IVNA London make a large reed diffuser?
Our bottle is 200ml, so for very big rooms we suggest two bottles or a Home Set. Our reed diffusers are handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside.
Scent a big room with two bottles
If your room is over about 46 sq m, two bottles in one scent is the honest answer from us. Put Mayfair Library at each end of a big living room, or plan the whole home with our Home Sets. You can see every scent in our reed diffusers range.
New to IVNA London? Every scent we make comes as a reed diffuser and a matching luxury scented candle, both handmade in England.
