Best Reed Diffusers UK: 16 Compared on Lifespan and Cost per Month
The best reed diffuser for a UK home is not the cheapest or the most famous. It is the one that costs least each month for a scent you love. We compared 16 reed diffusers sold in Britain on how long each bottle lasts and what it costs per month. Our quick picks: IVNA London for luxury scent at under £16 a month, Rituals for value, and Trudon for a statement piece that lasts about seven months.
First, an honest note: we make IVNA London, so we have a stake in this list. Our reed diffuser is in bold, and we judged it on the same measures as every other brand. We also say where ours falls short. You can see all four of our reed diffusers handmade in England on one page.
Quick picks
Here are our top picks for different budgets. We explain every figure further down the page.
- Best luxury value: IVNA London costs £58 for 200ml and lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average). It is handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside.
- Best cheap test: the Aldi Hotel Collection costs about £3 a month. But it only lasts six to eight weeks.
- Best high street: M&S Apothecary costs about £6.80 a month and lasts two to three months.
- Best big bottle for under £40: Rituals The Ritual of Sakura offers a generous 250ml bottle for about £8.70 a month.
- Best natural feel: Aery Living lasts up to sixteen weeks and costs about £10.60 a month.
- Best mood blends: NEOM lasts up to twelve weeks and costs about £20 a month. Its blends are built around moods.
- Best designer scent: Jo Malone London lasts three to four months and costs about £21 a month.
- Longest lasting: Fornasetti gives eight to twelve months from one 500ml vessel. That is the longest in our list.
- Best statement piece: Trudon lasts about seven months and costs about £21 a month.
Why does cost per month beat price?
A £5 reed diffuser that runs dry in seven weeks and a £145 reed diffuser that runs for seven months are very different buys. The shelf price hides that difference. The monthly cost shows it at once.
Cost per month = price ÷ months it lasts.
This sum also shows what a refill saves you. And it shows why a small, cheap bottle can cost more over a year than you expect.
How did we work out lifespan?
We studied 18 British and American buying guides. We took each lifespan from one of three sources, shown in the table:
- Brand: the brand's own "up to" claim. We used the full figure, because "up to" means ideal conditions.
- Guides: the range British buying guides publish. We used the middle of that range.
- Estimate: where nobody publishes a figure, we used a common rule. A 100ml bottle lasts about seven weeks in a heated British room, and bigger bottles last longer in proportion.
Neither we nor any guide we read ran lab tests on these reed diffusers. The guides that tested products lived with each one for two days to four weeks. That is far too short to prove a claim of "lasts months". Prices are the latest British prices we found, so check them before you order.
How do the 16 reed diffusers compare?
The table runs from the lowest to the highest cost per month, so the best value comes first.
| Reed diffuser | Size and price | Lifespan | Cost per month | Refill sold? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aldi Hotel Collection | 100ml, about £5 | 6 to 8 weeks (guides) | £3 | Check brand site |
| M&S Apothecary | 100ml, about £17 | 2 to 3 months (guides) | £6.80 | Yes |
| Earl of East | 200ml, about £36 | 4 to 5 months (guides) | £8 | Check brand site |
| Rituals The Ritual of Sakura | 250ml, £34.90 | About 4 months (estimate) | £8.70 | Yes |
| Skandinavisk | 200ml, about £39 | 4 to 5 months (guides) | £8.70 | Yes |
| The White Company | 150ml, about £35 | 3 to 4 months (guides) | £10 | Check brand site |
| Aery Living | 200ml, about £39 | Up to 16 weeks (brand) | £10.60 | Yes |
| IVNA London (our brand) | 200ml, £58 | Up to 24 weeks, avg 16 (brand) | £15.70 | Yes, £42 |
| Dr. Vranjes Rosso Nobile | 250ml, about £70 | About 4 months (estimate) | £17.40 | Yes, 500ml |
| NEOM | 100ml, about £55 | Up to 12 weeks (brand) | £19.90 | Yes, about £38 |
| Molton Brown | 150ml, about £50 | About 10 weeks (estimate) | £20.70 | Check brand site |
| Trudon | 350ml, about £145 | 6 to 8 months (guides) | £20.70 | Yes |

| Fornasetti | 500ml, about £225 | 8 to 12 months (guides) | £22.50 | Check brand site |
| Diptyque | 200ml, about £150 | 4 to 5 months (guides) | £33.30 | Yes, about £75 |
Two things change these numbers in your home. Heat and draughts can halve any lifespan, turning £15.70 a month into about £31.40. A refill cuts the cost of every month after the first bottle.
The picks, by cost per month
Under £10 a month
Aldi Hotel Collection (£3 a month): about £5 for 100ml, and often sold as a dupe of designer scents. Guides say it lasts six to eight weeks. The scents are simple, and you will replace it every other month. It works best in a cloakroom or spare room, or to test a scent style.
M&S Apothecary (£6.80 a month): about £17 for 100ml, lasting two to three months. Most guides pick it as the best high street choice. Calm and Restore suit bedrooms and bathrooms, and you can buy matching refills.
Rituals The Ritual of Sakura (£8.70 a month): £34.90 for 250ml. Rituals does not publish a lifespan, so we estimate about four months from the size. The scent mixes soft cherry blossom with rice milk. The big bottle needs plenty of shelf space.
Earl of East and Skandinavisk (£8 to £8.70 a month): both sell 200ml for under £40. Guides estimate four to five months for each. They suit anyone who likes woody and green scents.
£10 to £20 a month
The White Company (£10 a month): about £35 for 150ml, lasting three to four months. Its clean, fresh scents match the brand's homeware. It is a safe choice that will not offend anyone.
Aery Living (£10.60 a month): about £39 for 200ml. The brand says it lasts up to sixteen weeks. It has plastic free packaging and sells refills. It is our pick for a natural feel.
IVNA London (£15.70 a month), our brand: £58 for 200ml. Our own figures say each bottle lasts up to 24 weeks, and around 16 weeks on average. It is handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside, from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base, and it is vegan. The 200ml refill comes with a fresh set of fibre reeds and costs £42, which cuts later months to about £11.40. That keeps our cost per month below the other luxury names in our table, while the scent sits with them. For more British makers, see our guide to British made reed diffusers.
We make four scents, and each one suits certain rooms. Choose Mayfair Library (vanilla, tonka and cedarwood) for living rooms, studies and slow evenings. Choose Belgravia Linen (Earl Grey, cucumber and white musk) for living rooms and guest bathrooms. Kew Morning (mandarin, bergamot and vetiver) suits kitchens and hallways. For bathrooms and bedrooms, choose Hampstead Spa (lemongrass, pine and cedar).
Where we fall short: 16 weeks is an average, not a promise. Beside a radiator, expect it to run out sooner, which raises the monthly cost. A single bottle can still struggle in a large open plan room, so use two bottles or choose one of our Home Sets.
Dr. Vranjes Rosso Nobile (£17.40 a month): about £70 for 250ml, lasting about four months by our estimate. The 500ml refill costs about £82 and should last around eight months. That cuts later months to about £10. It is the best refill deal among the luxury names.
NEOM (£19.90 a month): about £55 for 100ml. NEOM says it lasts up to twelve weeks. The blends focus on sleep and energy, using essential oils. The £38 refill cuts later months to about £14.
Over £20 a month
Trudon (£20.70 a month): about £145 for 350ml. Guides say it lasts six to eight months. You spend a lot once, then leave the bottle alone for half a year.
Jo Malone London (£21.40 a month): about £75 for 165ml, lasting three to four months. It appears in 9 of the 18 guides we read, more than any other brand. Some buyers find the scent soft for the price. For a fuller verdict, read cheap vs luxury reed diffusers.
Molton Brown and Carrière Frères (£20.70 to £21.70 a month): neither brand publishes a lifespan, so these are our own estimates. One Marie Claire editor said an empty Carrière Frères bottle scented her office for over a year. It may beat our figure.
Fornasetti (£22.50 a month): the longest lasting of all at eight to twelve months. It comes in a 500ml hand decorated vessel that doubles as an ornament.
Diptyque (£33.30 a month): about £150 for 200ml, lasting four to five months. That makes it the dearest per month here. The £75 refill halves the cost of every bottle after the first.
What are the best luxury reed diffusers?
At the top end, you pay for four things: a richer scent, a vessel you keep on show, a bigger bottle and the name. Only the first three change how your home smells. The table below shows how the luxury names compare per month.
| Luxury reed diffuser | Why people buy it | Lifespan | Cost per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| IVNA London (our brand) | Handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside | Up to 24 weeks (avg 16) | £15.70 |
| Dr. Vranjes | Florentine house with the best luxury refill | About 4 months | £17.40 |
| Trudon | French candle maker since 1643. Big bottle | 6 to 8 months | £20.70 |
| Jo Malone London | Famous scents that match its colognes | 3 to 4 months | £21.40 |
| Carrière Frères | Botanical scents from Paris | About 14 weeks | £21.70 |
| Fornasetti | Hand decorated porcelain vessel | 8 to 12 months | £22.50 |
| Diptyque | Cult scents like Baies and Figuier | 4 to 5 months | £33.30 |
| Acqua di Parma | Rich Italian scents like Oud | About 13 weeks | £35 |

How do you make any reed diffuser last longer?
Keep it away from radiators
Heat speeds up evaporation. A reed diffuser beside a radiator in January can run dry in half the time it takes in May. Keep every reed diffuser at least a metre from heating and out of direct sun.
Keep it out of draughts
Older British homes are often draughty. Moving air carries the scent away and dries the fibre reeds. For fixes, read why can't I smell my reed diffuser?
Use the right number of fibre reeds
| Room | Bottle | Fibre reeds |
|---|---|---|
| Loo or small bathroom | 100ml | 3 to 5 |
| Bedroom | 100ml | 4 to 6 |
| Hallway | 100ml to 200ml | 6 to 8 |
| Living room | 200ml, or two 100ml | 8 or more |
| Open plan kitchen diner | Two bottles, one at each end | All fibre reeds |
Every extra fibre reed empties the bottle faster. In a small room, fewer fibre reeds can add several weeks. Our room size guide and how long reed diffusers last explain more. For the strongest scent, see our strongest smelling reed diffusers.
Flip less often
Flipping the fibre reeds gives a welcome boost but uses oil faster, so once a week is plenty. Our guide to how to use a reed diffuser explains the process step by step.
Are they safe with pets and children?
Reed diffusers have no flame, so there is no fire risk. The real risk is the liquid. Spilled oil can harm a child or pet that drinks it or gets it on their fur. Put the bottle on a high shelf, on a tray, where a curious cat cannot knock it over. Cats are more sensitive to some essential oils than dogs. Seven checks before you buy any reed diffuser
Price tells you little on its own. These seven checks tell you whether a reed diffuser will work in your room, at any price.
- Does it list the notes? Top, heart and base notes point to a layered blend that smells more like perfume than air freshener.
- Does it say which rooms it suits? Room guidance shows the brand knows how its scent behaves in a real home. "Fills any room" is a warning sign.
- Is the lifespan honest? A number of weeks means little without the room size, the number of fibre reeds and whether it sat near heat.
- What do reviews say about strength? Search reviews for "strong", "weak" and "can't smell", and trust reviewers whose rooms are like yours.
- Are fresh fibre reeds included? Fibre Reeds clog over time, so a new set in the box matters.
- Is there safety information? A reed diffuser liquid classed as hazardous must carry a CLP warning label. Good brands add placement advice too.
- What is the cost per week? Divide the price by the weeks it lasts in your room. It is the fairest value test there is.
Quick answers
What is the best reed diffuser in the UK?
For luxury scent at a modest monthly cost, choose IVNA London at about £15.70. For the lowest cost, choose Aldi at about £3, if you accept a simpler scent. Fornasetti and Trudon last longest. But the best reed diffuser for you is the scent you love, at a monthly cost you are happy with.
Which reed diffuser lasts the longest?
Fornasetti lasts longest at eight to twelve months. Trudon comes next at six to eight months. Bigger bottles last longer, and a large refill is usually the best value per pound.
How long does a 100ml reed diffuser last?
Most last six to twelve weeks. A heated room, a draught or using every fibre reed at once will shorten that. Our IVNA London reed diffuser is a larger 200ml bottle and lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average).
Who makes IVNA London reed diffusers?
They are made for us in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside. For other common questions, see our reed diffuser FAQs.
Are supermarket reed diffusers as good as luxury ones?
They sell as dupes, and many shoppers rate them highly. But the scent is simpler and fades in weeks rather than months. For a cloakroom or spare bedroom, they are hard to beat on price.
