Reed Diffuser vs Candle vs Plug In vs Wax Melt: Which Is Best for a UK Home?
For all day background scent with no effort, a reed diffuser is the best choice, while a candle wins for mood and atmosphere when you are in the room. Plug ins and wax melts give stronger bursts, but they need electricity and more upkeep. Most homes do best with reed diffusers for everyday scent and candles for the evenings, and for the evening side you can see our guide to luxury scented candles.
How do they compare side by side?

Reed diffuser
Choose it if: you want your home to smell good all the time without thinking about it, including the hours when nobody is in.
A reed diffuser draws fragrance oil up through the fibre reeds and releases it into the room all day, with no flame and no electricity. The only regular job is to flip the fibre reeds once a week, which takes a few seconds and brings the fragrance back to full strength.
Downsides: it is gentler than a plug in and can struggle in very large, draughty rooms where the scent drifts away. The oil can also mark wood, so stand the bottle on a coaster and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Scented candle
Choose it if: you want to change the whole feel of a room for an evening, whether that means dinner, a bath or a quiet night in.
A candle adds soft, moving light as well as scent, and nothing else creates quite the same atmosphere in a room. Our candles come in the same four scents as our reed diffusers, so you can layer a candle over a reed diffuser without the two fighting each other.
Downsides: a candle only works while it is lit, it needs watching the whole time, and it is a fire risk. That makes it less ideal for homes where small children or pets are roaming about.
Plug in air freshener
Choose it if: you want steady scent in a small room and you have a free socket in a sensible place.
Downsides: a plug in uses electricity, the refills add up over time, and many people find the scent synthetic or get headaches from them. They also look like air fresheners, which is not something everyone wants on show in a room they have styled with care.
Wax melts
Choose it if: you like strong, short bursts of fragrance and enjoy changing the scent in your home from one day to the next.
Downsides: you need a burner, which often means a tea light or a plug, and hot wax around children and pets is a real risk. The scent also fades within a few hours of melting, so you end up replacing the wax far more often than you might expect.
Electric or ultrasonic diffuser
Choose it if: you want to scent a big open plan room where a smaller product would struggle to reach every corner.
Downsides: it needs refilling with water often, it makes the air humid, and it always needs a socket nearby. Many of these machines are also designed for essential oils, so check what your chosen oil is meant for.
What about running cost?
The fairest way to compare these options is the cost for each week of scent that you can actually notice in the room. A candle that burns for, say, 40 hours gives you 40 hours of scent, while a reed diffuser keeps working day and night for weeks. So even when the price you pay up front is similar, a reed diffuser usually gives you far more hours of scent for each pound spent. The exact figures depend on the brand and the room, so check how long each product says it lasts before you compare prices.
Which one do we recommend?
- Reed diffusers belong in the hallway, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom, where they give you constant scent through the day.
- A candle belongs in the living room for evenings, ideally in a scent that matches your reed diffusers.
- A room mist gives you a quick lift in the last few minutes before your guests arrive at the door.
Our Home Sets make this easy. Mix any three reed diffusers for £159, then add a scented candle in a matching scent for your evenings.
Quick answers
Is a reed diffuser better than a candle?
For everyday scent, yes, because a reed diffuser works all day with no flame, but a candle is better for atmosphere and many homes use both.
Reed diffuser or plug in, which is stronger?
Plug ins are usually stronger because they use heat to push the fragrance out, while reed diffusers need no power and tend to smell more natural in the room.
Are wax melts better than candles?
Wax melts give a stronger scent and some burners have no open flame, but they need replacing more often and still involve hot wax.
The combination we suggest
Use a reed diffuser for all day scent and a candle in the same scent for your evenings, and the Belgravia Linen reed diffuser and the Belgravia Linen scented candle make a lovely pair. For a brighter scent in the kitchen, light the Kew Morning scented candle instead.
You will find plenty more answers to common questions in our reed diffuser FAQs.
