Reed Diffuser vs Electric Diffuser: Which Is Better for Your Home?

A reed diffuser gives a steady, low scent all day with no power, no water and almost no effort. An electric diffuser gives a stronger scent you can switch on and off, but it needs water, cleaning and a plug. For hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms, most homes are better served by a reed diffuser, but for a quick burst of scent in a large room, an electric diffuser wins. For our picks, see our guides to the best home diffusers, reed diffuser vs electric and the strongest smelling reed diffusers.

How does each one work?

Reed diffuser. This is a bottle of fragrance oil with fibre reeds standing in it. The oil travels up the fibre reeds and evaporates from the tips, and it works on its own, day and night, until the bottle runs dry.

Ultrasonic diffuser. This is the most common electric type, and you add water and a few drops of essential oil. A small plate vibrates and turns the water into a fine mist that carries the scent into the room.

Nebulising reed diffuser. This stronger electric type uses no water and breaks neat oil into tiny particles. It gives the most scent, but it also uses oil the fastest.

How do they compare side by side?

Reed diffuser Electric diffuser
Scent Soft and constant, all day Stronger, in bursts or on a timer
Power None Needs a plug or charging
Daily effort None. Flip the fibre reeds once a week Refill water, add oil, switch on
Cleaning None Regular cleaning to stop residue and stale water
Noise and light Silent, no light Quiet hum, often a light
Best rooms Hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms, small rooms Large living spaces, short sessions
Looks Sits on display like a decorative object A small appliance

Which smells stronger?

An electric diffuser smells stronger while it is running, because it pushes scent into the air instead of waiting for it to evaporate. A nebulising diffuser is stronger again.

A reed diffuser is gentler but never switches off. That makes it better at the job most people want, which is a home that smells good whenever you walk in. If your reed diffuser feels too faint, the fix is usually placement or fibre reeds, so see 7 fixes that work.

Which is less effort?

A reed diffuser wins by a long way, because you set it up once and flip the fibre reeds weekly. An electric diffuser needs fresh water and oil each time you use it, and the water tank needs regular cleaning. Old water left standing can go stale.

Which is better with pets?

Take extra care if you have cats at home. Cats Protection advises cat owners to avoid ultrasonic and nebulising diffusers. These spread essential oil droplets into the air your cat breathes. For reed diffusers, it advises keeping them out of rooms your cat uses and making sure the room is well aired. Read Cats Protection's advice and ask your vet about your own pet.

Whatever you choose, keep it up high, on a stable surface, out of reach of pets and children. You can read more in our pet placement guide.

Which suits which room?

  • Hallway: choose a reed diffuser, because it greets you and your guests every time the door opens.
  • Bathroom and downstairs loo: a reed diffuser works best, as there is no water tank or plug near the sink.
  • Bedroom: a reed diffuser is silent, gives off no light, and is soft enough to sleep with.
  • Large open plan room: use an electric diffuser for short bursts, or two reed diffusers placed apart, and see our guide to scenting a large room.
  • Home office: either works, and a fresh herbal reed diffuser sits well on a shelf near the desk.

Quick answers

Is a reed diffuser or an electric diffuser better?

For all day scent with no effort, choose a reed diffuser, and for a strong burst of scent you control, choose an electric diffuser.

Do electric diffusers use a lot of electricity?

Most small ultrasonic diffusers use very little power. The bigger cost is your time, as you need to refill them, clean them and remember to switch them on.

Can I put reed diffuser oil in an electric diffuser?

No, because reed diffuser oil is made to travel up fibre reeds and evaporate. Use only the liquid the maker of your electric diffuser recommends.

Can I use both?

Yes, and many homes use reed diffusers in hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms, and something stronger in the living room when guests are over.
