How Long Does a Reed Diffuser Take to Work?
Most reed diffusers start to scent a room within a few hours of the fibre reeds going in. It usually takes one to two days to reach full strength, because the fibre reeds need time to soak up the oil all the way to the tips. You can speed this up by flipping the fibre reeds once, roughly an hour or two after you first set the reed diffuser up.
Why is it not instant?
A fibre reed works like a straw, so when you first put dry fibre reeds in the bottle, the oil has to travel up through tiny channels inside each one. The fragrance only reaches the room once the oil arrives at the top and starts to evaporate, and until then you may only notice it close to the bottle. If you want a reed diffuser that properly fills a room once it gets going, see our guide to the strongest smelling reed diffusers.
What is the rough timeline?
| Time after setting up | What to expect |
|---|---|
| First hour | Faint scent near the bottle |
| A few hours | A light scent in a small room |
| One to two days | Close to full strength |
| After that | A steady scent for weeks |
These are typical timings rather than guarantees, and a cold room, a large room or a draughty spot will usually take longer to fill.
How do you make it work faster?
- Flip the fibre reeds once after an hour or two, so the soaked ends move to the top and give the room an instant lift. Do it over the sink to catch any drips.
- Use all the fibre reeds for the first few days, because you can always take some out later if the fragrance becomes too strong for the space.
- Start in a smaller room, since a hallway or bathroom fills much faster than an open plan kitchen and living area.
- Keep it out of draughts, because moving air carries the fragrance away before it has a chance to build up in the room.
- Place it at waist height, where people walk past, as the gentle airflow from people passing by helps spread the fragrance around the room.
Avoid putting it on a radiator to speed things up, because heat makes the oil evaporate much faster and shortens the life of the reed diffuser. For more on this, see how long reed diffusers last and what affects it.
Still can't smell it after two days?
Work through these simple checks before you decide anything is wrong with the reed diffuser itself:
- Are the fibre reeds upside down or clogged? Old or dusty fibre reeds stop wicking properly, so replace them with a set of fresh fibre reeds.
- Is the room too big? One small bottle will struggle to fragrance a large lounge, however long you give it.
- Are you nose blind? Your brain quietly tunes out smells it meets all day long. Step outside for 15 minutes, then walk back in and notice what you smell. You can read more about nose blindness in our separate guide.

Quick answers
How long does a reed diffuser take to work?
It usually takes a few hours for a light fragrance, and then one to two days to reach full strength.
Should I flip the fibre reeds straight away?
Wait an hour or two so the fibre reeds can soak up some oil, then flip them once, and after that flip them about once a week to keep the fragrance fresh.
Why is my new reed diffuser not working?
Give it up to two days to get going properly, and if you still can't smell it, check the fibre reeds, the room size and any draughts, and then try the nose blind test.
Do reed diffusers work straight away?
Not fully, because although you will smell them close up quite quickly, they need more time to fill a whole room.
