Best Affordable Luxury Reed Diffusers UK Under £60: Cost per Month and Lifespan Compared
The best affordable luxury reed diffusers in the UK cost under £60, yet they still give you a layered scent, a good bottle and a lifespan with a number on it. Earl of East has the lowest monthly cost at about £8, Rituals gives you the biggest bottle, and M&S Apothecary is the high street benchmark. Our own luxury reed diffusers are £58, inside this budget, and our £42 refill brings the cost down after the first bottle.
A quick note first: we make IVNA London, so we have a stake here, but we judged our bold row on the same numbers as the rest and say where it falls short.
This guide is about what you get for under £60 and what it costs each month, so if where it is made matters more, read our guide to British made reed diffusers.
Quick picks
- Handmade in England, with a refill: IVNA London costs £58 for 200ml and lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average, about £15.70 a month). Our refill with fresh fibre reeds is £42.
- Best for the lowest monthly cost: Earl of East costs about £36 for 200ml, and guides say it lasts four to five months, which is about £8 a month.
- Best for a big bottle: Rituals The Ritual of Sakura gives you 250ml for £34.90, which is about £8.70 a month by our estimate.
- Best for a greener choice: Aery Living is plastic free and costs about £39 for 200ml, which comes to about £10.60 a month.
- Best safe gift: The White Company costs about £35 for 150ml, which comes to about £10 a month.
- Best high street benchmark: M&S Apothecary costs about £17 for 100ml, which comes to about £6.80 a month.
If you want a warm, layered scent for a living room, the best place to start is our Mayfair Library reed diffuser, with vanilla, tonka and cedarwood, at £58.
What is affordable luxury?
"Luxury" is printed on a lot of £5 bottles, so we set four tests, and a reed diffuser has to pass all four of them to make this list.
- Layered notes mean the scent has a top, a heart and a base that the brand names, because a flat single note is not luxury, whatever the label says.
- A good bottle is made of glass, with a narrow neck and a shape you would happily leave out on a shelf, and Ideal Home advises narrow necked bottles.
- An honest lifespan means the brand gives a figure, or UK guides agree on a range, and if nobody does, we estimate and say so.
- Under £60 means the normal price of one bottle, rather than a sale price that may not last.
We also check the cost per month, and for more on that, read our guide on how to compare luxury reed diffusers.
What a US retailer's test found, and what we added
Candle Delirium, a US shop, put 12 luxury reed diffusers in a 1,200 square foot showroom, then checked whether each one could be smelled from 12 feet after 48 hours. Trudon Cyrnos was the only one to score 10 out of 10 for throw, but the most useful finding was on value, where the sweet spot was the $41 to $60 band.
The UK numbers point the same way, but US prices do not map onto UK prices and that test gave no cost per month, so we built a UK table under £60 that shows both. We did not run a lab test, and instead we pulled the figures from 18 UK and US buying guides.
How do affordable luxury reed diffusers under £60 compare?
Cost per month = price ÷ months it lasts, and the lifespan is either the brand's own claim (brand) or the middle of the range that guides give (guides). Where there is neither, we assume about seven weeks per 100ml in a heated UK room (estimate), and the table is sorted from the lowest to the highest cost per month.
| Reed diffuser | Size and price | Lifespan | Cost per month | Refill sold? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M&S Apothecary (benchmark) | 100ml, about £17 | 2 to 3 months (guides) | £6.80 | Yes, 230ml about £15 |
| Earl of East | 200ml, about £36 | 4 to 5 months (guides) | £8 | Check brand site |
| Rituals The Ritual of Sakura | 250ml, £34.90 | About 4 months (estimate) | £8.70 | Yes |
| Skandinavisk | 200ml, about £39 | 4 to 5 months (guides) | £8.70 | Yes |
| The White Company | 150ml, about £35 | 3 to 4 months (guides) | £10 | Check brand site |
| Aery Living | 200ml, about £39 | Up to 16 weeks (brand) | £10.60 | Yes |
| St Eval | 150ml, about £34 | About 10 weeks (estimate) | £14 | Check brand site |
| IVNA London (our brand) | 200ml, £58 | Up to 24 weeks, avg 16 weeks (brand) | £15.70 | Yes, 200ml £42 |
| Molton Brown | 150ml, about £50 | About 10 weeks (estimate) | £20.70 | Check brand site |
Two things can shift these numbers in your home, and the first is that a refill cuts the cost of every month after the first bottle. The second is heat, which can halve any lifespan, so £8.70 a month can turn into about £17.
The picks in detail
IVNA London: our own, handmade in England
Our bottle costs £58 for 200ml, which is inside this guide's budget. It comes in a green glass apothecary bottle with fibre reeds, gift boxed, and it is made from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base, is vegan and gives a 10X stronger scent.
Our reed diffusers are handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside.
Each product page lists the notes, as well as the rooms the scent suits, so you can see that Mayfair Library suits living rooms and studies. Mayfair Library blends vanilla, tonka and cedarwood. Our Belgravia Linen reed diffuser is Earl Grey, cucumber and white musk for living rooms and guest bathrooms, while Kew Morning is mandarin, bergamot and vetiver for kitchens and hallways.
Where we fall short: at £58 we have the highest shelf price in this guide. Our reed diffusers last up to 24 weeks, but around 16 weeks is our average, and near a radiator you should expect nearer 8 weeks, or about £31.40 a month. A refill with fresh fibre reeds costs £42, about £11.40 a month, which brings the cost down after the first bottle. In an open plan room you may still need two bottles. IVNA London is a new name.
The best value big bottle
Earl of East costs about £36 for 200ml, and guides put its lifespan at four to five months, which makes it the lowest cost per month in the luxury group, at about £8.
Watch out for: we could not confirm that a refill is sold, so check with the brand before you plan on one.
Soft cherry blossom in a big bottle
Rituals charges £34.90 for 250ml and gives no lifespan, so we estimate about four months from the size of the bottle, and refills are sold.
Watch out for: four months is our own estimate rather than a claim made by the brand, so the real cost per month could be higher or lower.
A big Nordic bottle with refills
Skandinavisk costs about £39 for 200ml, and guides say it lasts four to five months, which is about £8.70 a month, with refills on sale too.
Watch out for: at about £39 it has the highest shelf price of the two bottles that come to £8.70 a month.
Clean, fresh and gift friendly
The White Company charges about £35 for 150ml, lasting three to four months by guide figures, or about £10 a month, in scents such as Seychelles, Winter and Sleep.
Watch out for: it makes a safe gift, but check the notes first if you want a scent with real depth.
Plastic free, with refills
Aery Living costs about £39 for 200ml, is plastic free and sells refills, and the brand says it lasts up to 16 weeks, or about £10.60 a month.
Watch out for: up to 16 weeks is a best case, so expect less near heat.
Made on a Cornish farm
St Eval costs about £34 for 150ml, and since no lifespan is published, we estimate about 10 weeks, which is about £14 a month.
Watch out for: with no published lifespan, you are taking our own estimate on trust, so treat the monthly cost as a rough guide.
A well known name at £50
Molton Brown costs about £50 for 150ml, which sits near the top of our budget, and since no lifespan is published, we estimate about 10 weeks. That comes to about £20.70 a month, which is double the monthly cost of most of the other picks here.
Watch out for: it costs about the same each month as a £145 Trudon reed diffuser, even though the price on the label is very different.
The high street benchmark
M&S Apothecary costs about £17 for 100ml and lasts two to three months by guide figures, about £6.80 a month, and a 230ml refill costs about £15. It is our yardstick, so if a £35 reed diffuser does not smell clearly better, skip it and look at our guide to cheap reed diffusers instead.
What do you give up against a £150 reed diffuser?
At £150 you pay for a bigger bottle, a vessel that works as decor and a famous name, and some of these bottles carry further too. Candle Delirium found that Trudon Cyrnos was the only reed diffuser in its test to score full marks for throw.
| Reed diffuser | Size and price | Lifespan | Cost per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| IVNA London (our brand) | 200ml, £58 | Up to 24 weeks, avg 16 weeks (brand) | £15.70 |
| Trudon | 350ml, about £145 | 6 to 8 months (guides) | £20.70 |
| Diptyque | 200ml, about £150 | 4 to 5 months (guides) | £33.30 |
Here is the honest trade: under £60, you buy more often, because most bottles hold 100ml to 250ml, and the bottle is nice rather than a work of art. In a big open plan room, a £150 bottle may carry further, but under £60 you still keep a scent with a top, a heart and a base, at less than half the monthly cost. How do you make a £35 reed diffuser work like a £150 one?
Match the bottle to the room
Aroma Reed Diffusers says a 100ml bottle suits a room under about 23 square metres, and above about 46 square metres, you should use two bottles instead of one.
Keep it away from heat
Ideal Home says to keep reed diffusers away from radiators and sunny windowsills, as heat uses up the oil fast, and that is why a 12 week bottle can last only 8 weeks.
Use the right number of fibre reeds
Affinati suggests 4 to 6 fibre reeds in a bathroom, 5 to 7 in a bedroom and 8 or more in a lounge, and you should use fewer when the heating is on.
Give it time, then flip less
The Guardian says a new reed diffuser takes 24 to 36 hours to reach full strength, so wait before you judge it, then flip the fibre reeds once a week at most. Flipping gives a boost but uses up the oil faster, and you can read more in our guide to how long reed diffusers last.
