Best Cheap Reed Diffusers UK: Budget Picks Under £20 That Actually Last
The best cheap reed diffusers in the UK are the ones with the lowest cost per month, not the lowest price tag on the shelf. On that test Aldi Hotel Collection wins at about £3 a month, and IKEA NJUTNING and Dunelm are close behind at under £4. M&S Apothecary is the best high street pick if you want a softer scent that is less sweet than most, and it has a refill on sale too. IVNA London is not a budget buy: at £58, our strong, long lasting reed diffusers are the step up pick.
A quick word first: we make IVNA London, so we have a stake in this guide, and our reed diffuser is shown in bold in each of the tables below. It is not cheap and we say so plainly, and we also tell you where it falls short of the budget brands on price.
This guide is about money, so if scent strength matters more to you, start with our guide to strong smelling reed diffusers instead. If you care most about where a reed diffuser is made, our guide to British made reed diffusers covers that side of things in full.
Quick picks
- Best for the lowest cost: Aldi Hotel Collection costs about £5 for 100ml, which works out at about £3 a month in a normal room.
- Best for a big bottle on a small budget: Dunelm sells a 200ml bottle for about £12, which comes to about £3.70 a month.
- Best for several rooms at once: IKEA NJUTNING is about £9 for 150ml, so you pay about £3.60 a month for each bottle you use.
- Best for a softer high street scent: M&S Apothecary is about £17, or about £6.80 a month, and a refill is on sale too.
- Best for a gift under £20: Beautifully Unique or Botanical Candle Co both have nice bottles, but they cost over £11 a month by our estimate.
- Best for stepping up to UK made: IVNA London is £58 for 200ml, so it is not a budget pick.
If a cheap bottle keeps letting you down, start with our vanilla, tonka and cedarwood reed diffuser, which is £58 and lists the rooms it suits on its own page.
Why is cost per month the fair test?
A £5 bottle that runs dry in seven weeks can cost more over a year than a £12 bottle that runs for three months. The shelf price hides this, but the cost per month shows it, which is why we use it for every bottle in this guide.
Cost per month = price ÷ months it lasts.
Most budget guides list prices and stop there, so we show where each lifespan in our tables comes from and how we worked it out. Guides is the middle of the range that UK guides give, while Brand is the brand's own "up to" claim for how long a bottle lasts. Estimate means no figure is published, so for those we assume about seven weeks per 100ml in a heated UK room, scaled by size. We did not run lab tests, and the prices are the latest we could find, so please check each one before you buy.
How do cheap reed diffusers compare?
The table below is sorted from the lowest cost per month to the highest, so the best value for money sits at the top and the dearest sits at the bottom.
| Reed diffuser | Size and price | Lifespan | Cost per month | Refill or spares |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aldi Hotel Collection | 100ml, about £5 | 6 to 8 weeks (guides) | £3 | Check in store |
| IKEA NJUTNING | 150ml, about £9 | 2 to 3 months (guides) | £3.60 | Check in store |
| Dunelm (e.g. Sea Salt & Vetiver) | 200ml, about £12 | About 14 weeks (estimate) | £3.70 | Spare fibre reeds, 10 for £1 |
| Habitat/Argos Patchouli & Amber | 90ml, about £9 | About 6 weeks (estimate) | £6.20 | Check brand site |
| M&S Apothecary (Calm, Restore) | 100ml, about £17 | 2 to 3 months (guides) | £6.80 | Yes, 230ml about £15 |
| Beautifully Unique Fresh Linen | 100ml, about £18 | About 7 weeks (estimate) | £11.20 | Check brand site |
| Botanical Candle Co Neroli | 100ml, about £18.95 | About 7 weeks (estimate) | £11.80 | Check brand site |
| IVNA London (our brand, step up) | 200ml, £58 | Up to 24 weeks, avg 16 (brand) | £15.70 | Yes, 200ml refill £42 |
Look at Beautifully Unique and Botanical Candle Co: they cost under £20, yet by our estimate they cost more each month than the £17 M&S bottle does. A low price is not the same thing as a low cost, and this is where the gap between the two shows most clearly.
The budget picks, one by one
The cheapest per month: about £3 a month
Aldi Hotel Collection. It costs about £5 for 100ml and is sold as a dupe of designer scents such as Pomegranate, and guides say it lasts six to eight weeks. For a loo or a quick scent test before you commit, nothing else on this list costs less per month than this one does.
Watch out for: stock comes and goes in store, so you may not find it when you need it, and at that lifespan you will end up buying about six bottles a year.
A Swedish homeware pick: about £3.60 a month
IKEA NJUTNING. It costs about £9 for 150ml and guides say it lasts two to three months, which makes it a fair pick if you want one in every room without a big bill.
Watch out for: one bottle may not fill a big living room, and if you use two bottles you double the monthly cost as well.
The biggest budget bottle: about £3.70 a month
Dunelm. It costs about £12 for 200ml, which is twice the liquid of most budget bottles, but no lifespan is published, so we estimate about 14 weeks. Dunelm also sells spare fibre reeds at 10 for £1, which is a cheap way to keep an old bottle working for longer.
Watch out for: our lifespan for this bottle is our own estimate, and it is not a figure that the brand itself gives.
Small bottle, warm scent: about £6.20 a month
Habitat/Argos Patchouli & Amber. It costs about £9, but you only get 90ml, and we estimate it lasts about six weeks in a heated room. It looks cheap next to Dunelm, but it costs almost twice as much per month once you have done the sums, at about £6.20.
Watch out for: small bottles like this one tend to run dry fast when they sit in a warm room, so you will be back at the shop sooner than you think.
The high street benchmark: about £6.80 a month
M&S Apothecary. It costs about £17 for 100ml and guides say it lasts two to three months, while Calm and Restore are softer and less sweet than most high street scents. This is the one that most of the UK guides we read agree on, so it is a safe place to start.
Watch out for: the first bottle is the dear part, because the 230ml refill at about £15 gives you more than twice the liquid for less than the bottle price.
Pretty bottles, higher cost: over £11 a month
Beautifully Unique and Botanical Candle Co. Both cost about £18 to £19 for 100ml and look good on a shelf, but neither gives a lifespan, so by our estimate they cost about £11.20 and £11.80 a month.
Watch out for: you pay for the look here, so they make a nice gift, but they are not the cheap way to scent a room.
When does paying more save you money?
Cheap is not always cheapest, and there are three things that can turn a dearer buy into the better deal over the months that you use it.
- A bigger bottle: Dunelm's 200ml at about £12 costs £3.70 a month, while Habitat's 90ml at about £9 costs £6.20, so the bigger bottle wins.
- A refill: once you own the M&S bottle, the 230ml refill is where the saving sits, and ROOMOI sells refills at about £3.60 per 100ml.
- A very large size: Candlelight sells a 1000ml bottle for about £26. The brand says it lasts 9 to 12 months, or about £2.50 a month, so read our guide on whether a 1 litre refill is worth it first.
The reverse is true too: Rituals mini sticks cost about £18.90 for 70ml, or about £16.60 a month by our estimate, while the 250ml bottle at £34.90 comes to about £8.70.
When a £58 reed diffuser costs less per month
Here is the honest maths: a £58 IVNA London bottle will never beat Aldi, IKEA or Dunelm on cost alone. Of the buys below, the first bottle only just beats the small Rituals bottle.
| If you would otherwise buy | Their cost per month | IVNA London, first bottle | Monthly saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rituals mini sticks, 70ml | £16.60 (estimate) | £15.70 | About 90p |
| Botanical Candle Co Neroli | £11.80 (estimate) | £15.70 | None, about £3.90 more |
| Beautifully Unique Fresh Linen | £11.20 (estimate) | £15.70 | None, about £4.50 more |
Once you own the bottle, our £42 refill with fresh fibre reeds brings later months to about £11.40. To keep this fair, remember that our 16 weeks is an average, and near a radiator you should expect it to run out sooner. Then the saving goes. For room size, Aroma Reed Diffusers says a 100ml bottle suits rooms under about 23 square metres. Above about 46 square metres, it says you should use two bottles rather than one.

Why do cheap reed diffusers smell sharp or fade fast?
Most of what is in a bottle is the base that carries the scent up the fibre reeds, and that base, along with how much scent goes in, shapes what you smell.
Alcohol heavy bases: Danbury & Lovejoy says alcohol bases push scent out hard, then fade and can smell sharp. Bases made with DPG (dipropylene glycol) release more slowly, which suits the way most UK homes are heated.
Less scent in the mix: Aroma Reed Diffusers says cheap brands use less fragrance than premium ones, but that is an industry claim, not a tested figure. It does fit what many people notice, which is that a cheap bottle can smell strong for a week and then go quiet.
Simple scents: a cheap blend often has only one or two notes, and bright citrus tops are the first to fade away. Aroma Reed Diffusers says woody scents linger longer than citrus, so if you buy cheap, a woody or amber scent may hold up better than a lemon one.
Rules that changed: since 2021, IFRA safety standards have cut how much of many ingredients a reed diffuser can hold, which affects every brand.
How do you make a cheap reed diffuser last longer?
Use fewer fibre reeds
Every fibre reed pulls oil out of the bottle, and Affinati suggests 4 to 6 fibre reeds in a bathroom, 5 to 7 in a bedroom and 6 to 8 in a hallway. In a small room, start with fewer fibre reeds, because you can always add more later if you can't smell it.
| Room | Fibre reeds to start with | Budget tip |
|---|---|---|
| Loo or small bathroom | 4 to 6 | Aldi 100ml is plenty |
| Bedroom | 5 to 7 | Pick a soft scent, M&S Calm suits |
| Hallway | 6 to 8 | Dunelm 200ml lasts longest per pound |
| Living room | 8 or more, or two bottles | Two cheap bottles beat one small one |
Keep it away from radiators
Heat dries the oil out faster, so Ideal Home says to keep reed diffusers off sunny windowsills and away from radiators. In radiator season, using fewer fibre reeds will also help the bottle last a good deal longer.
Flip less often
Flipping the fibre reeds gives the scent a boost, but it drains the bottle faster, so do it once a week at most and no more. A new reed diffuser takes a day or two to reach full strength, so give it time before you add any more fibre reeds.
Buy spare fibre reeds
Clogged fibre reeds make a bottle seem empty when it is not, and fresh fibre reeds, like Dunelm's 10 for £1, can wake it up again. When you change to a different oil, always start with new fibre reeds rather than reusing the old ones, because they still hold the last scent.
When should you step up from a budget reed diffuser?
A cheap reed diffuser is fine for a loo or a spare room, but it is time to step up when the scent goes sharp or flat after a week. The same goes when the bottle sits on show in a room guests use, or when you want a scent with more than one or two notes.
This is where we come in, and we will be plain about the numbers: an IVNA London reed diffuser is £58 for 200ml and lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average). Our reed diffuser page describes them as strong and long lasting.
They are made from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base and are vegan, and skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside make them for us in England. Each one comes in a green glass apothecary bottle with fibre reeds, in a gift box made from FSC certified board.
Each product page lists the notes, along with the rooms that the scent suits best, so you can choose with care. Our mandarin, bergamot and vetiver reed diffuser is a fresh, bright scent for kitchens and hallways. If you like lemongrass, our Hampstead Spa reed diffuser pairs it with pine and cedar, and it works well in bathrooms and bedrooms.
Where we fall short: 16 weeks is an average, and near a radiator you should expect it to run out sooner. Our £42 refill brings later months to about £11.40, which still costs more than the M&S or ROOMOI refills. IVNA London is a new name.

Quick answers
What is the cheapest reed diffuser that actually works?
Aldi Hotel Collection at about £5 lasts six to eight weeks in most rooms, which makes it the cheapest per month at about £3. If you want a bigger bottle that needs changing less often, Dunelm's 200ml at about £12 comes close at about £3.70 a month.
Are supermarket reed diffusers any good?
For the price, yes: they are sold as designer dupes and suit small rooms, and guides say they last six to eight weeks, so expect to buy about six a year.
Why does my cheap reed diffuser smell of alcohol?
Some budget bases are alcohol heavy, so they throw scent hard at first, then fade and can smell sharp, while a DPG base tends to release its scent more slowly.
How long does a cheap reed diffuser last?
A 100ml budget bottle often lasts six to eight weeks in a heated room, and bigger bottles last longer. Using fewer fibre reeds and a spot away from radiators both add time, and you can read more in our guide to how long reed diffusers last.
Is IVNA London a budget reed diffuser?
No, because at £58 it is a step up. It is made from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base and is vegan, and skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside make it for us in England.
You will find more answers in our reed diffuser FAQs, including tips on care, fibre reeds and where to place a bottle in your home.
Ready to step up?
If a cheap bottle has done its job and you want more, start with one room, and our Mayfair Library reed diffuser suits a living room well. To scent several rooms, our Home Sets let you mix any three reed diffusers for £159, or five for £250.
