Best Reed Diffuser Brands UK: 15 Brands Compared on Cost per Month and Lifespan

The best reed diffuser brand for a UK home is whichever one gives you a fragrance you like at a monthly cost you are happy with. We compared 15 brands on their reputation, bottle size, price, lifespan, cost per month and refills. On the high street, M&S and Dunelm cost least each month, while for luxury fragrance at under £16 a month, we place our own brand, IVNA London, beside Rituals. For a statement piece, Trudon and Dr. Vranjes last longest per bottle.

A quick note before we begin: we make IVNA London, so we have a stake in this comparison. Our row appears in bold in each table, and we judged it on exactly the same numbers as every other brand, explaining where it falls short. You can browse all our luxury reed diffusers on one page.

Quick picks

Here are our top choices for different budgets and priorities, and every figure is explained in detail further down the page.

  • Best for a cheap test: the Aldi Hotel Collection costs about £5 for 100ml, roughly £3 a month, although each bottle only lasts six to eight weeks.
  • Best for a big cheap bottle: Dunelm offers 200ml for about £12, which works out at about £3.70 a month by our estimate.
  • Best high street brand: M&S Apothecary costs about £6.80 a month, and matching refills are available.
  • Best for luxury scent at a mid price: IVNA London charges £58 for 200ml, about £15.70 a month, and a £42 refill brings later months to about £11.40.
  • Best big bottle under £40: Rituals offers 250ml for £34.90, about £8.70 a month.
  • Best for a greener choice: Aery Living, now sold as Osmology, offers plastic free packaging and refills.
  • Best luxury refill: Dr. Vranjes offers a 500ml refill that brings later months down to about £10.
  • Best statement piece: Trudon costs about £145, but a single bottle lasts six to eight months.

How did we build this list?

Most brand lists give you one line per brand and no numbers at all. Many "tested" guides lived with each reed diffuser for between two days and four weeks, which is far too short to check a claim of "lasts months". Few published refill prices, and almost none calculated a cost per month.

We therefore read 18 British and American buying guides and gathered their numbers into one table. We did not run laboratory tests ourselves, and for lifespan, we used one of three sources, which we always identify:

  • Brand: this means the brand's own "up to" claim, used in full, so treat it as the best case.
  • Guides: this means the middle of the range that British buying guides publish.
  • Estimate: where nobody publishes a figure, we assumed about seven weeks per 100ml in a heated British room, scaled by size.

Cost per month = price ÷ months it lasts. Prices are the latest British prices we found, so please check them before ordering.

What are the best budget brands?

Aldi Hotel Collection: marketed as a dupe of designer fragrances such as Pomegranate, this is the cheapest brand here at about £3 a month. It works perfectly well for a spare room or cloakroom, where subtle fragrance is enough. Watch out for: guides say each bottle lasts six to eight weeks, so you will be buying replacements most months.

Dunelm: you get 200ml for about £12, and spare fibre reeds cost about 10 for £1. Dunelm publishes no lifespan, so our figure is an estimate based on bottle size. Watch out for: a simple fragrance, and a big bottle that needs generous shelf space.

Habitat (Argos): this costs about £9 for a 90ml bottle of warm Patchouli & Amber fragrance. Watch out for: the small bottle, which by our estimate runs for about six weeks, making it more expensive per month than M&S.

M&S Apothecary: this is the high street brand that most guides recommend, costing about £17 for 100ml and lasting two to three months. A 230ml refill costs about £15. That refill reduces the cost of later months considerably. Watch out for: the fragrances are soft, so a large room may need two bottles.

What are the best mid range brands?

IVNA London (our brand): our reed diffuser costs £58 for 200ml in a green glass apothecary bottle, with fibre reeds, gift boxed. It lasts up to 24 weeks (around 16 weeks on average), about £15.70 a month. Our reed diffusers are handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside. They are made from organic natural ingredients, with a plant based reed diffuser base and are vegan. Each product page lists the notes, together with the rooms each fragrance suits. Try Mayfair Library for a living room, Kew Morning for a hallway or kitchen, or Hampstead Spa for a bathroom. For more British makers, see our guide to British made reed diffusers.

Where we fall short: 16 weeks is an average, and beside a radiator it will run out sooner. We make one size only, 200ml. A 200ml refill with a fresh set of fibre reeds costs £42, about £11.40 a month. IVNA London is a new name.

Rituals: The Ritual of Sakura gives you 250ml for £34.90. Rituals publishes no lifespan, so we estimate about four months from the size. Watch out for: the mini sticks, because at 70ml for about £18.90, they cost about £16.60 a month by our estimate.

The White Company: this costs about £35 for 150ml and lasts three to four months, with clean fragrances that few people will dislike. Watch out for: we found no published refill price, so check the brand's own website before planning around refills.

Aery Living, now Osmology: this costs about £39 for 200ml, and the brand says it lasts up to sixteen weeks. It offers plastic free packaging, refills, and a tree planted for every order. Watch out for: following the rebrand, the same fragrance may appear under two different names in shops.

St Eval: this costs about £34 for 150ml of herbal and floral blends. Watch out for: there is no published lifespan, and our estimate of ten weeks puts it at about £14 a month.

NEOM: this costs about £55 for 100ml, and NEOM says it lasts up to twelve weeks, while the £38 refill reduces later months to about £14. Watch out for: a soft throw, so NEOM suits a bedroom better than a spacious lounge.

Molton Brown: this costs about £50 for 150ml of bold, spicy fragrance such as Black Pepper. Watch out for: the brand gives no lifespan, and our estimate of ten weeks works out at about £20.70 a month.

What are the best luxury brands?

Dr. Vranjes: Rosso Nobile, from this Florentine house, costs about £70 for 250ml. The 500ml refill costs about £82 and should last about eight months by our estimate, which reduces later months to about £10. Watch out for: the first bottle costs the most per month, so the savings only arrive once you start buying refills.

Trudon: this costs about £145 for 350ml, and guides say it lasts six to eight months. One American retailer test rated Cyrnos the only reed diffuser to score 10 out of 10 for throw. Watch out for: a substantial upfront cost, although the bottle then lasts for many months.

Jo Malone London: this brand is named in 9 of the 18 guides we read, more than any other, and costs about £75 for 165ml, lasting three to four months. Watch out for: some buyers consider the fragrance soft for the price, so read our guide, Is a Luxury Reed Diffuser Worth It? How to Judge One Before You Buy

Diptyque: this costs about £150 for 200ml and lasts four to five months. The Guardian found that Figuier had the strongest throw of the 50 products it tried. Watch out for: the highest cost per month here, although the £75 refill halves it after the first bottle.

How do you judge a reed diffuser brand?

  • Check whether it publishes a lifespan: only three brands in our table give their own figure, and without a figure, you cannot calculate the cost per month.
  • Check whether it sells refills, and at what price: refill cost per 100ml ranges from about £3.60 to about £38 across British brands.
  • Check whether it lists the notes: top, heart and base notes tell you what you are buying before you smell the fragrance.
  • Check whether it says which rooms it suits: a soft floral fragrance will disappear completely in an open plan room.
  • Check for safety claims it cannot prove: be wary of "non toxic" or "pet safe" printed on a bottle of fragrance oil.
  • Bottle shape: a narrow neck and rattan reeds help the oil last longer.

Our comparison of cheap vs luxury reed diffusers explores these questions in more detail.

Reed diffuser vs candle

A reed diffuser gives a steady, gentle fragrance all day without any flame, whereas a candle gives a stronger burst, but only while it burns. Most homes benefit from both, with a reed diffuser in the hallway or lounge doing the daily work. Light a candle in the same fragrance for evenings or guests, since each IVNA London scent has a matching candle, such as the Mayfair Library candle. See our guides to reed diffuser vs candle vs plug in and how to pair a candle and reed diffuser.

Where should you not put a reed diffuser?

  • Next to a radiator: heat speeds up evaporation, so keep every reed diffuser at least a metre away.
  • On a sunny windowsill: sunshine warms the oil, which then dries out faster.
  • In a draught: open windows and old doors carry the fragrance away.
  • On bare wood: spilt oil can mark the finish, so use a coaster or tray. See our guide to reed diffuser oil on wood.
  • Where pets or children can reach it: the risk comes from the liquid being drunk, licked or spilt. See our guide to reed diffusers, cats and dogs.

How do you get the most from any brand?

Give a new reed diffuser 24 to 36 hours to reach full strength, and place it around the middle of the room, slightly above the floor. Hallways work particularly well, because people walking past keep the air moving.

Match the number of fibre reeds to the size of the room, using four to six in a bathroom, five to seven in a bedroom, and eight or more in a lounge. Above about 46 square metres, use two reed diffusers instead of one. Using fewer fibre reeds during radiator season can add weeks, and flipping them once a week at most helps too, because flipping consumes oil faster. Our room size guide and our explanation of how long reed diffusers last go into more detail.

Quick answers

What is the best reed diffuser brand in the UK?

For low cost, choose M&S or Dunelm, and for luxury fragrance at a mid price, choose IVNA London at about £15.70 a month or Rituals at about £8.70. For long life from a single bottle, choose Trudon.

Which reed diffuser brand lasts the longest?

Of these 15, Trudon lasts longest, at six to eight months from 350ml. Bigger bottles naturally last longer, and a large refill often beats buying a new reed diffuser.

Are cheap reed diffusers worth it?

For a spare room, yes, because Aldi costs about £3 a month. However, cheap bottles fade within weeks, so the saving is smaller than the shelf price suggests. See our guide to the longest lasting reed diffusers.

Who makes IVNA London reed diffusers?

Our reed diffusers are handmade in England by skilled candle makers in the Essex countryside.

Why can I not smell my reed diffuser any more?

Often you have simply become nose blind to the fragrance, or the fibre reeds have become clogged. Replace the fibre reeds with fresh ones about every six months, and find further answers in our reed diffuser FAQs.

Find your scent on the same numbers

If you want luxury fragrance without a designer cost per month, start with Mayfair Library for a living room or study. For a kitchen, try Kew Morning instead. If you are fragrancing more than one room, a Home Set lets you mix any three scents for £159, or five for £250, or you can browse all our reed diffusers.
